OpenGL patch for GPL

by Kamefido » Thu, 14 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Since the new OpenGL patch came out for GPL, I was wondering... I havent bought
the game yet mainly because of the frame rates that my computer would have with
it. I cant run it in the 3d modes because I have a STB Velocity 3d 128 card.
Now that they have come out with the OpenGL patch, I can run it in 3d. I have
the demo and am trying to get it to run the OpenGL patch, with no success.
Anyone know if it even possible to run the demo with the OpenGL patch?
If it is, how?

I don't know about your card, but I have heard that there's a glide to Direct3D
wrapper.  I'm not sure how effective it is, but you may be able to benefit from
it...

OpenGL patch for GPL

I just got GPL (full game, not the demo; can't speak to that) working on a
friend's 350PII  with the STB Riva 128ZX-based card.  It was a bit of a pain
finding the right drivers.  You'll have to use these:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/whql/drivers/win98/disply/A37686.exe

The latest reference drivers from nvidia wouldn't work, but these do.  Then,
when you use the Core.ini included with the opengl patch, set the values as
follows:

TossHighestMip=0
MipFiltering=3
MirrorsEvery=6

You'll have to drop the field size way down and turn off some eye candy, but

depending on graphics choices) this way.  The mirror setting is the biggie of
the three.  You can also change to the rollbar view for driving, which works OK
and takes the mirrors out of the equation.  You do this by changing the driving
view value from 1 to 12  in the personal information stanza of the player.ini
file.  It's in the gpl/players/"yourname" folder.  If you prefer the std. view,
just hit F10 while driving and it resets.  If you set the sound quality to 0 in
the gpl/app.ini file, it'll buy you a few more FPS also, but it won't sound as
nice.  Give it a whirl.

Better yet, save up for a V2 card.  I saw an 8mb online for $79 the other
day(via shopper.com).  That's what I use on my funky old 200MMX, and in GPL, it
kills a 350PII with the STB card; even with the patch.

Hope this helps,

Steve B.
