Help with GPL graphics

I am wondering if anybody knows how to fix the problem I'm having with GPL
(besides staying on the track :) ).  It seems every half second the game
pauses for a fraction of a second and then continues on.  It's really
noticable and ruins what is otherwise a fantastic simulation.  I've used
both the generic and directx driver for my Nascar Pro steering wheel, MS
Precision Pro Joystick, and even the keyboard.  I have also reduced the
graphics in an attempt to fix this problem, but that didn't help either.  I
am using my soundblaster's game port since I don't have a slot open for my
ACM gameport.  By the way polling on interrupts has been setup with both
checked and not checked.  Also nothing is running in the background.

Here is my system's specs:
Pentium MMX 233Mhz
32 MB RAM
CL Voodoo 2 (12MB)
Windows 98
SB 64 AWE
TM Nascar Pro Steering Wheel

Thank you, any insight would be helpful,
David Radecki

I've read of several others having this problem, and I also notice it
myself.
People have suggested disk drive accesses, texture loading, or multitasking
might be causing it, but I don't believe any of that.  I have 128 megs and
there
are no disk accesses going on.  It doesn't happen on other games.  And too
many other people have had the same problem.  I'm convinced it's an issue
with GPL, not the system it's running on.  In my case the pauses are
noticeable
only when the framerate is in the mid to high 20's, and they're not too bad
(but I'd rather they weren't there at all).

That sure sounds a lot like what was going on with me when I had Fast Find
from Office 97 running on my system without me knowing about it, especially
if you've got hard drive access going on during the pauses. Make absolutely
sure you don't have anything else running.  Outside of that, you might try a
fixed-size swap file.  Plus, you ought to to jack up that 32 megs of ram to
at least 64 or even 128. What you have is just barely enough to do the job
nowadays, and might also be partly causing your problem.

Clark Arch

Help with GPL graphics

Do you have any other cards in your system?  Maybe network cards or
something like that?  You can create a second hardware profile and
then try disabling various pieces of hardware not needed for GPL one
by one in that profile until you (hopefully!) find out which driver is
causing the problem.  Whenever I have the driver for my 3Com Etherlink
card loaded it causes slight pauses, barely noticable, but there all
the same.  Stupid ISA card!

That's an idea.  I'll give it a try.  I don't have an Ethernet card on my
system though.  I do have a second parallel port card, and a TV tuner card
(although I doubt that the tuner card would cause a problem).  Thanks for
the advise though.

I have a very similar system except 64MB and Diamond card.  Never had that
problem.  You might fix your swap file to a min. value, mine is 100MB.  Also
do you have L2 cache and how much.  That might also be possible suspect,
although I may be wrong.
