I had problems with GPL 1.1 where first the sound would go, then the frame
rate dropped off and the game eventually locked. Hitting Escape did nothing
until I tried to Alt-Tab, then it let me return to the pits. I found the
problem happening after one lap of the Nurburgring, I also noticed lots of
hard disc activity (paging?) when the frame rate dropped.

I found that switching off Norton AntiVirus program scheduler and disabling
Auto Protect before starting the game seems to have cured the problem. I'm
using a 12MB Creative 3D Blaster with the standard Win 98 drivers on a P2
350 with 128MB RAM and an MS FF wheel.

I occasionally have a similar problem whereby the sound goes off and the
frame rate drops - for some reason the cure is to press both mouse
buttons at once!

I think it may be some sort of internal reset for the game's sound
interrupt code.

where did you get the drivers from? I didn't find any newer drivers on
their page than the 2.08 detonator drivers ...
