GPL and hardware reqs

by Graeme Nas » Fri, 04 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Hi All,

I downloaded the original GPL demo as soon as it came out but I found
that running it well on my system was something of an impossibility. I
could only get a decent frame rate by turning off virtually all the
textures and setting it to minimum resolution.
Since I'm running an MMX P200 with 32mb RAM and a Matrox Mystique
graphics card, I'm left wondering what sort of systems you guys are
running? And is the new version easier on hardware?

Also, I can't really acommodate a Voodoo graphics card so do you think
an upgrade to 64mb RAM would be the next best thing?

I'd be really grateful if people could help me out on this.

Happy Racing,
Graeme Nash

The GPL Watkins Glen demo ran fine for me in 640x480 on a
Pentium MMX 166 running at 208, with a Voodoo 1 card and 64 MB.

If the reason you can't accomodate a Voodoo card is lack of a
free PCI slot, you could consider replacing your old Mystique
with a newer 2D/3D card.  (There are several contenders out
there, and you need to read comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.video
and some *** / hardware web sites to get a good feel for
their relative strengths and weaknesses.)  If it's cost, you
can get a new off-brand Voodoo 1 card for about $50 (check
www.pricewatch.com), and I presume used ones are even less.

You really need a 3dfx card to run GPL. I have a P200 with 96mb RAM and a
Voodoo2 card. I could have wished a faster CPU, but the Voodoo card does all
the difference.
I don't think upgrading the RAM will help much for speed in GPL apart from
saving more replay laps, but upgrading to 64 (or 96) will make you system
quicker as disk swapping will be minimised.

Don't bother buying GPL until you have a 3dfx card.

...or a Rendition card... Runs just as nicely on my V-Raptor(Rendition
2200) as it does on my Voodoo2.

No. A Diamond Stealth II (Rendition) would be the next best thing.

I run a P200,64m ram, VD1. AT 8x600 everything full, it runs fine.
Well at least for my likings :) Proablaly about 20-25fps, dunno how to
measure it accuratly.

Yes, but aren't they a lot more expensive? The original poster has a
tight budget.

Depends on your definition of 'a lot', but the original poster never
really mentions his budget anyway.  He only says he can't accommodate a
Voodoo card, perhaps its the cost, but it could also be the lack of a
free PCI slot.  Assuming he just wants to replace his primary 2D/3D
card, for GPL the 8MB Thriller3D will be well worth the extra money over
the 4MB StealthII.

System = PII-450 o/c 504, 256Mb, Voodoo2 SLI, bought mainly for GPL
(Nordschleife here I come.. <g>). Runs like a dream with fiddling about in
Win98.

Generally More Ram = better replay storage. Probably not much better overall
game performance. Voodoo or Rendition = world of difference (try and
accommodate one if at all possible).

This reply is actually just a good excuse to say thanks for loads of decent
GP2 tracks!

Hi again,

OK, let me clarify my earlier message as things have swung around now
and I have the money (200) to get a 3D adapter so that I can drive GPL
"for real".

To recap, I have an MMX Pentium 200 with 32mb RAM and a 2mb Matrox
Mystique graphics card.

Could anyone give me advice on what is the best 3D card to get? I have
heard that a rendition is better than a voodoo 2 as I don't have a PII.
But then I've heard that a voodoo 2 is just better.

I'm really confused!

In that case, I stand corrected, and would consider the option
adviced by Eric.

My two cents worth....

I have both Voodoo2 and Hercules Thriller 3D (Rendition V2200). In
both my old P225MMX and my new Celeron 300 the Rendition card is
noticably faster - very significantly faster if there are a lot of AI
around (such as in the pits).

If you are only interested in GPL then the Rendition is by far the
best choice, the V2200 is definitely preferred over the V1000 or the
V2100. If you play other games that use 3D then you need to weigh up
how important is good support for GPL, and consider Rendition v's 3dFX
in other games you enjoy.

Cheers!
