GPL Hardware question

by Don Chapma » Sun, 04 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I have been a Papyrus sim junkie since Indianapolis 500 the Simulation, and
therefore I was an early adopter when they announced the Rendition version
of Indycar II. I have had an Intergraph Intense 3D 100(originally called
Reactor), since Oct. of 1996. I have also owned a Diamond Monster 3D,
Canopus Pure 3D, and now 2 Canopus Pure 3D II's in SLI mode. I was
originally planning on purchasing either a 3DFX Banshee or RIVA TNT AGP to
try to give me the best overall 2D/3D solution for ***, but I just play
Rendition Indycar 2 and SODA too much to ditch my little old Rendition. I
also know that the newer V2100 and V2200 Rendition cards will not run
Rendition Indycar 2 at all unless you do all the funky tweaking, and I have
heard results even then may vary.

Anyway, after reading completely through many posts and Alison Hine's GPL
site(http://www.racesimcentral.net/~alison/gpl/), I think I may upgrade to the 8mb
Thriller 3D Rendition V2200, but I have some questions for anyone who may
already have this card. Is it better to get the PCI version or the AGP
version. What will be the advantages of the AGP over SLI, if any,
particularly for GPL. Also, GPL does run great on my Voodoo2 SLI setup, but
I do prefer the look of the Rendition version. I always play Nascar 2
Rendition, as opposed to 3DFX, but for GPL I do like the fact that I can do
the higher resolutions. What is the highest resolution the Thriller 3D will
allow in GPL? Will the frame rate at same resolution be better on the
Thriller 3D than the Voodoo2 SLI? How much of a performance increase will
there be for SODA, Nascar 2, and Indycar 2(assuming I can get it to work),
with the Thriller 3D? How is the D3D perfomance of the Thriller 3D? Is it
better than Voodoo2 in SLI? How much should I expect to pay for one, and are
there any major retail stores that are known to carry them(as opposed to
mail order)?

My current setup is an ABIT BX6 motherboard, Pentium II 266(not celeron),
64mb 100mhz SDRAM, Intergraph Intense 3D, 2 Canopus Pure 3D II's in SLI,
Xitel Storm VX PCI sound card.

If I was going to upgrade one thing to improve performance in GPL, what
would give me the best increase for the buck? Replacing the Intense 3D with
Thriller 3D? Increasing RAM from 64mb to 128mb? Purchasing Intel Celeron
300a, and try to overclock it to 450mhz? (currently being done successfully
by many, according to Tom's Hardware guide - http://www.racesimcentral.net/) -
I've got about $200 to spend(Papyrus always seems to cause me to upgrade,
even when I think I've got a kickin' machine), and I just wanted to know
which way to go for the best overall performance increase.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The above quote from my previous post should read "What will be the
advantages of the Thriller 3D AGP over the Thriller 3D PCI, if any,
particularly for GPL?" I got all my abbreviations mixed up. Whoops...
