Another pesky GPL hardware question

I have a pll233 w/64m sdram and an 8m Thriller  and am able to race online
w/36 fps with no problem(w95), my original intent when adding the Thriller
was to add a voodoo ll card eventually to really boost my rig for GPL. Has
anyone tried this combo, and is it worth the investment? I'm thinking(Look
Out!) that with the voodoo3 out, maybe vll's will become less
expensive.....I firmly believe that if some is good, more is better, so will
I be able to run all eye candy, full grids and 36fps? With the addition of a
3dfx card, will I be limited to 3dfx only,rendition only,or both at once? I
dont use anti-aliasing or the other 2 options, I think they***up the
horizon too much, does 3dfx have any bad or unusual attributes I should be
aware of? My box is used almost exclusively for driving sims and surfing, so
my primary focus is to optimize the thing for driving, especially with the
upcoming release of Nascar3. Any and all comments welcomed, thanks.        Ed

Your bottleneck is the cpu speed. Either rendition chips (thriller) or 3dfx
chips (voodoo) will run GPL well. On systems under 300-350 the thriller 8 meg
will outperform 16 megs of voodoo. On faster 400+ systems it starts to favor
voodoo. But then the look is a personal preference. As for SLI voodoo's there is
no benefit, 32 megs of voodoo will give you unbeleivable fps in quake but no
advantage in GPL over a single 8 meg thriller.
I know that at 233 you must turn off a lot of detail and run minmum ai cars to
get 36 fps by the time you get second gear. With a 450 you can turn it all on
and do just that.
Get an abit mobo and a celeron 300a for under $200 and overclock it, chances are
it will o/c to 374 or even 450 like mine. If you want more info e:mail me.

You can't! Either you use the 3D Rendition or 3dfx aka Voodoo etc..
That will not run together in GPL or any other game that I know of?
Remember I said {that I know of?}

One advantage you do get with the SLI'd Voodoo2's is higher resolution at
the same frame rate. I've got an 8MB Rendition V2200 and 2 12MB Voodoo2's
and there is no comparison between the 2 on my PII-450 running at 504MHz.
The Voodoos allow higher resolution and, IMO, I can see into the distance
better. With everything turned on at 1024x768 resolution with 19 AI, I get
19fps at the start of a race which quickly (within half a lap depending on
traffic) increases to 36fps. I usually use 800x600 online to make sure that
I always get 36fps with everything turned on.

The other things that have helped me get better frame rate are an SBLive
sound card (worth at least 2 fps), and a USB modem (not worth much for
framerate but the disconnects don't happen).

Not true! I went from a single V2 to SLI and 1024x768 suddenly became silky
smooth with no performance penalty compared to 800x600. From what I've heard
a Thriller will start to struggle at 1024x768 with loss of framerate.
