OT: Trying to reinstall my MS SW FF Pro wheel. Problems.

by pw » Fri, 25 Feb 2005 15:14:56

Hi,

I am trying to get back into NR2003 and am interested in the new EA
NASCAR sim.

I am running Windows 2000 Pro with Service Pack 4.

I plugged it back into a USB port and it got detected.  I was asked to
insert the Sidewinder CD.  I can't find it.  Any way, I don't recall
needing it with Win2K SP4 (in fact, there are no drivers to be found
for it at the MS site).

So, just to make it happy, I found the two DLLs it was asking for
already installed on my system and pointed the install program to
them.

Well, now the controller appears to show up as a joystick and there
isn't the controller interface that I remember I used to use (FF
settings, etc....).

I tried to uninstall the device in the Game Controllers interface, but
it tells me I must use the Device Manager.  Well, it isn't listed in
the Device Manager!  It is listed as controller id 1 as a MS SW Force
Feedback Pro Wheel.

Maybe one DLL that I found was for the old SW FF Joystick I used to
use, and one was for the wheel?

Any way,  does any one know how to get this wheel working?

And, will this wheel work in NSR??  If not, I may just end up getting
the MOMO FF Wheel.

Thanks!

You need the cd to reinstall it. It will say it doesnt work with that
version or something, but you install anyway and it should work. I've got a
few extra copies of it laying around if you cant find it..

Hi Paul,

Have you tried installing the Sidewinder Vers 4 software? It comes up
with a warning that it won't work when you try to install, but if you
ignore the warning and install anyway it should work fine I believe.

Good luck!

Ade.

Thanks!  I can't find my CD and nothing at Microsoft's site.  I seem
to remember a Sidewinder page but I did a Google and nothing is
showing up.

Guess it's time for a new wheel!

Thanks guys.

PW I saw at windrivers.com I think it was, the installer.. for the latest
drivers (from the CD) you do have to install it.  I even have it somewhere
zipped but on a drive no longer in a machine at the momement  It wans that
big maybe 13 megs?

IMHO that MS, is a Very good wheel, so if your going to get a new one
because you dont have the CD, Ill buy that one one from you :)  I have my
buddy who wants one, and I have cd he can use.

Thanks!  I will check out windrivers.com.  I will keep trying.  I had
it working in Win2000 with NASCAR 2003 a couple of months ago!  I
don't know what the heck Windows problem is.  Perhaps because it's no
longer in the same USB port (?).

$30 a year?  I will look elsewhere.  I doubt I'd ever use that site
again.

Sidewinder Version 4 software does not exist, only 3.2 (which is for
95, 98, and Me).

Thanks.

Yes it does, it came on CD with the USB versions of the wheel, but
it's not available for download.

Let me know if you can't find it and I'll see about zipping it up from
the CD and putting it online somewhere for you.

Microsoft, for some bizarre reason never explained by them for 5 years now,
never made version 4.0 downloadable.

And, in fact, there are _multiple_ verisons of 4.0.  Each SideWinder USB
device came with it's own version of 4.0.

Nice hardware.  Antiquited software and boneheaded support.

Larry are you sure (at least about the wheels)?

I am not positive but I have the non ff, and OK, it is different yes.  but I
also have 2 black *** ff wheels (version 1's), (actually lost one in a
move) and one Red *** (aka version 2) these all 3 FF wheels seemed to
have the same SW.

I would be happy to burn the CD for PW, if he figures out how to contact me.
So again you PW adress a note to the one in thread, or stingre32 as the name
and send it to me at Hotmail.  surely that is easy enough?

The SideWinder USB Joystick and Wheel did indeed come with their own version
of 4.0.
