Problems with daisychained M/S gamepads after installing MS FF Wheel

by andy taylo » Mon, 14 Jun 1999 04:00:00

Hi ,

Here's a weird one that I just can't seem to get to the bottom of.

I am getting stuttering/jerky gameplay in several games when I have 4
Sidewinder gamepads daisychained after installing my new M/S FF wheel.
The worst offenders are UEFA Champions League (Eidos), Superbikes (EA
Sports) , TOCA2 ( Codemasters ).

To pinpoint the problem I reformatted my HardDrive, put on a fresh clean
install of Windows 98, installed my Voodoo3 video drivers and the latest
drivers for my SBLive soundcard.
Installed UEFA, plugged in my 4 sidewinders and using the Win98 built in
drivers the game will play perfectly 1-4 player, with all pads plugged in,
smooth as silk.
Checked Toca2 and Superbikes - both OK also.

NOW

Installed latest version 3.02 of Microsoft Sidewinder Game Device software,
( so I can get my M/S FF wheel to work as Win98 does not seem to have built
in drivers ) and now if I have all 4 gamepads plugged in the games seem to
'stick' / 'jerk'  , every 5 seconds or so. Reminiscent of Internet Lag,
slight pauses - you get the picture.
If I just have one pad plugged in the problem dissapears, but this is no
good for 4 player UEFA or 4 player Toca 2!!!!
As iI add the 2nd , 3rd pad etc, the problem reappears and gets worse as
more pads are added !

I can't seem to get to the bottom of it, I am assuming the Game Controller
software has installed a new driver for my gamepads (along with the new
wheel driver) which doesn't like 4 pads plugged in at the same time with
these games........weird huh ?

It really is drivng me up the wall, anybody else have a the same amount of
pads, same wheel, and say UEFA / Toca2 ? Do you have any problems ?

I wanted to try and remove the new gamepad drivers and put the original ones
off the Win98 CD back - or just install the new FF Wheel drivers off the
Games Device CD.... but I don't know what they are called or whether this is
possible.....

any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully received..

Many Thanks

Andy
