F1 2001 - 2nd impressions!

by Iain Mackenzi » Sun, 07 Oct 2001 17:24:03

Having noted from various sources that there is a problem with the 21.81
dets I went back to the 12.90s which I have always got the next best results
from, and what a difference!  (Obviously is a problem with F1 2001 and
21.81s)

I almost take back everything I said - F1 2001 is looking good.

Graphics now look fantastic.  Never seen so much good looking detail at
Suzuka, Monaco, etc.  Super smooth now even at 1280x1024 full race at back
of grid.

Mirror problem has gone, as has the 'going through treacle' syndrome.

No graphic corruption at all.

Physics now feels great and the control from the wheel (despite no FF) is
excellent.

Now that I've had a chance to race properly, the AI is looking good.  I've
tried at 50%  and 75% aggression levels and the balance seems to be about
right.  Clever and challenging.

Sound is still pretty poor, but some of that may be down to problems with
the current set of SBLive drivers and XP.  I'll reserve judgement on that.

All in all, I'm looking forward to giving it a good test over the weekend,
and my trip back to EB has been cancelled!

There seems to be no definitive answer on drivers, it seems to depend on the
combination of card and PC. Glad you found one that works!

& there is me thinking you are a "GPL snob" - like you never post about
anything else :)

I am off to try the 12.90s...

Yeh, I think the physics are looking good

Good news

Interesting I think the sound is the best yet for modern F1

Also interesting you have XP, a poster on HG also say that XP gives
excellent frame rates, so maybe there is something here.

Nice one!

What sound card are you using? and what drivers? With my SB live and
Liveware 3.0 i note a flickering on the scrren evry 20, 30 second and make
the game a little poor...

The V3 won't work with the EA titles?  That sucks...  The V5 works fine, so
it's not a 3dfx issue.

I have a Voodoo 3 with an overclocked Celeron 450 running at 850 and I have no
problem with EA's SBK 2000 and 2001.  Just for the record.   On what do you
base your comment.  I would like to know whether or not to buy f12001.

Much appreciated.

From the readme:

The following cards do not work with F1-2001:

3DFX Voodoo 1,2 and 3 series (including Voodoo Banshee cards)
3D labs Permedia 3
S3 Savage 3D, 4, 2000

Please note : This game requires a 100% Direct X8 compatible card which
means that the Voodoo3 (although popular) is not supported and does not work
with this game.

Incredible but if you use Fraps while playing F1 2001 the performance
increase a lot !!!!!!!!

Worth the upgrade IMHO Rafe.

I've forgotten GP3-2000 & F1RC already :)

After an initial driver hell this is looking, feeling and sounding superb.

Unless you must have FF, or demand complete track accuracy then I would
recommend this one for single player - can't comment on multi player at this
stage.

Did I mention the sound - at last!

Cheers

Really beginning to agree Tony.  F1RC came off my drive last night, and GP3
2000 is on the verge!

I read your first review and kept thinking you were driving F1 2000!

Glad you got things resolved, I think its the second best F1 game ever made,
a close second to GPL.  Pity about the No-AI in Multiplayer thing and no FF
(as yet).

BTW sound is AWESOME on my Sonic Fury, best sound in modern F1 by far.

I agree with your opinion on the sound. This game sounds great going through
all the gears full out!!
