Which is better: GP2 or F1RS ??

by Fuji Sarton » Mon, 09 Feb 1998 04:00:00

Hello ..

I know that this may have been discussed before but we don't get F1RS here
in North America and hence no magazine has actually reviewed it.

I'm interested in knowing how these two games compare to one another . . .

Thanks.

 Fuji,
There is simply no comparison. I remember two years ago when GP2 really
raised the bar in the sim racing ranks. Well, F1RS has raised the bar that
much or more from the level of GP2. The sensation of speed is just great and
the graphics are easily the best ever in a racing sim. The driving is so fluid
that it is difficult to describe. I can't say enough good things about this
sim, I find myself hurrying to finish things so I can rationalize firing up
the game and ripping through the streets of Monaco. I do live here in the
states and ordered my copy; 1-800-UBI-SOFT. In a word- fantastic!
    All the best, Mike Davis

Both are worth owning.  GP2 is SVGA graphics only and takes a lot of
system power to get a high frame rate for the graphics, but is worth it
because the driving model is very good.  GP2 is from the 1994 year, so
cars and tracks aren't up to date as well, but there are utilities on
the 'net which can help this.

F1RS is great with its 3D graphics, esp. on a 3Dfx card.  It also has
wet weather which GP2 does not.  Setups I think are a little harder to
get in F1RS, but once you do it is worth the work.  F1RS is the '96
season, so things are a little more up to date.  Sound isn't quite as
good as in GP2 I think.

Both games have same fault in very bad menus.

Hi there
F1RS is a much better game in terms of graphics and modernity. It
supports network play and is muc more configurable.
The down side is that it requires a 3D card which GP2 does not.
I prefer F1RS though I still play Gp2 (AND Gp1 for that matter which I
reckon is better then either of them as a racing simulator)

I only have the F1RS Demo, so it is difficult for me to comment on the sim as
yet, except to say that the graphics are indeed stunning. I can't wait to get
my hands on the real thing. That said, being a recent convert to GP2, I am just
thrilled with the sim. I've only had it about a month ( yeah I know.....it's
been out for years...I'm kinda new at this! ) and I can't stay away. There is
so much online support for GP2, you could spend hours just downloading new
carsets, tires, scenery, adverts, anything you can think of to make it as
authentic or as custom as you'd like it. Then there are the hours spent
driving! I've read a lot of complaints about the sim, but on my 233mmx with
millenium II board, it  runs excellent, well, except for the first turn at
Monaco, but I'm not willing to turn off all the trackside graphics just yet.<G>
I did yesterday on my friends P100 and found I'd lost all my braking
references! One final thing, as you probebly know, GP2 is no longer for sale,
however, at the Pomona Computer Fair over the weekend, I saw 4 un-opened copies
at $12.50 each.  Pick up a copy if you can find it, it's a blast to drive. BTW,
I don't  find the menu to be a problem at all.
