Is the driving model in the GPL demo (using the Grand Prix car choice)
the complete driving model?

It feels pretty arcadish to me.

I tried the actual game a few years ago and thought I remembered
something with a little more sense of the weight of the car drifting
around turns, etc.

I am used to driving NASCAR 4 and I realize that those cars are pigs
compared to the Grand Prix cars but I'm just wondering if I'm missing
something here.

Maybe you have the driving aids on? Still, with those aids on,
'arcadish' isn't exactly the right for GPL.. but I'll forgive you this
time.

I turned the driving aids off.  (Only because I'm not sure what they
mean by "throttle aid"...I was picturing a gnome running around my
feet pressing on the pedals...don't think I like the sound of that).

I wonder if it is something to do with having too fast of a chip (1.7
Ghz chip here) for the game.  I dunno.  The turns I'm making in that
car are mind boggling.  Maybe I'm just used to stock cars.  I will try
it again.

Did somebody say if you buy the game that it looks better than those
640x480 graphics?

Thanks.

It's probably because you're used to the stock cars. I can't stand
driving those trucks around. Feels like driving a bus when you're used
to a decent car.

<snip>

With a good graphics card, yes - I run it at 800x600 'cause I've got an
ancient PC, but plenty of people go higher - up to 1600x1200, I think.

As for the handling - make sure you're driving the Grand Prix cars not
the Trainers - the Novice Trainer in particular is very different to
the GP car. Check the control setup is right (linearity ec) for your
controller. And have a look at somewhere like www.gplea.org to see what
can be done...!

Okay, I figured out what is going on.

The game runs WAY too fast on my PC.  My best guess is that it is
running about 5 times faster than it ought to.

In other words I am visually moving at 250 mph but the speedometer is
showing 50 mph.  One of the results of this is that when I go flying
through turns (really really fast) there are no significant physical
forces acting upon the car's driving path (since to the game the car
is leisurely turning at 50 mph).

I don't have a stop watch but I counted "One one-thousand, two-one
thousand" and so on all the way around the track.  I counted to 27
that way in completing a single lap but the timer said I took 2 and a
half minutes.

Another time I completed a lap in less than a minute (maybe 45
seconds) according to the wall clock and the pit board said I took 3
minutes and 10 seconds getting the lap in.

There you have it.

One of the other side effects of driving this way is that I feel
really nauseous right now so I'm going to lay down.

Actually, I can agree with him.  I never agreed with the contention that it
was impossible to keep the car on the road, you needed 3 months of
perspiration-filled practice to string together three laps, etc.  I could
complete laps the first time I tried it, and if you drive it like an arcade
racer, especially with the view from behind the car, it is actually quite
easy to toss it into smoky powerslides around every corner.  Because of the
low grip, it does have an icy feel that doesn't seem right the first few
times you play it.  Sims with a focus on grippier cars operating at a razor
edge feel much more difficult, as the margin for error is lower.  GPL cars
can be tossed all over the track with reckless abandon.

But...  (you knew there had to be a but!)

Try going fast.  Then it's a whole different ball game.  My smoky, "arcady"
laps are easy to do, but they are bog slow compared to the top times.  Turn
the wick up a bit, and you start to get an idea of what the driving model is
all about.  Hitting the perfect compromise between slip and grip puts you at
a place where it's no longer an arcade racer.

The fast CPU is your problem... GPL runs too fast on anything over 1.4Ghz.
There is a patch to correct this bug, as well as a D3D patch which will
improve the visuals for you no end, IMO.

Buy it on budget, you won't regret it. Actually, you will, but not for
obvious reasons. ;-)

Damn, my Athlon XP 1600 wasn't fast enough for this bug to kick in. It
would be fun to drive Spa full speed with 5x time. :o

You need the cpu patch from papy. Also the demo, and v1.0 of the game uses
and old version of the physics. Get the full game and get the 1.2 patch, it
makes a lot of difference.

Meet,

Two things:

1. You need the 1.2.0.1 patch which improves the front-end grip, killing
some of the dreaded Papy Push (u'steer).  It doesn't bring it up to the
accuracy of the tire model in N4, but it helps.

>If you think GPL is too arcade-y, let's see if you're any good online....

I'm not sure I made it clear in my last post:  the reason it was so
arcadish is because according to the game's physics engine I was going
40 mph through the esses (though to me I was doing over 200 mph).  So
it looks like I'm going insanely fast but the car (only doing 40 mph)
is handling like a Tie Fighter.

(Making turns was more about timing the turn than driving; the point
at which I became suspicious was when I took at 90 degree right turn a
beat early and turned head on into the right wall at 180 mph without
even smoking the tires.)

On the straightaways I must have been hitting 700 mph.  I do remember
thinking, "Gee, Watkins Glen seems a lot *shorter* than in NASCAR 4".
LOL.
