Fresh out of the box, GPL looks just like the demo. After installing
all the user produced updates, it looks like a whole new game.
Have a look at the graphics on these sites.

Pardon some folks -they're a sensitive lot. ;-)
But you don't seem to have gotten much in the way of answers to your query, so I'll take a shot. Pardon if I repeat anything you've
seen.
Speed Racer Syndrome - The GPL had a problem with fast CPU's; normally it runs in real time - all the time; replays, too. There's a
fast-cpu patch that fixes this, but I don't believe it applies to the demo (may be wrong on that)
Graphics - you say 640X480? I'm guessing you're in software mode? There are opengl and d3d patches for the final game as the
original only supported the now-defunct 3dfx and Rendition cards, but I have no idea if they work with the demo. With the right
graphics patch, vid-card, and cpu, you can run gpl at insane resolutions and it's gorgeous (as you've seen from the add-ons pages).
Physics - the demo has slightly different physics. Papy tweaked the tire model in version 1.1, changing the tires' behavior under
sliding conditions, which is er, often, in gpl. Not a huge change, but noticeable, and easier to drive, IMO.
So, the demo WAS the same, but NOW it's not - by a longshot. The full game's well worth hunting down if you like to drive and race,
and are willing to practice, practice, practice... ;-)
Hope that's of use,
SB

I will certainly pick the game up and apply all applicable patches if
I can ever find a copy. I don't think I will mess with the demo any
further though. (Don't wanna spend a bunch of time trying to patch
something that only lets me run hot laps at the Glen).
Don't think they would've even imagined 1.4ghz CPUs.

Good call, GPL is STILL the only truly realistic open wheel sim
available IMHO. 3 years on even, shows you how advanced it was for its
time.
I saw it available on www.amazon.com for $5 US, can't argue with that
:)

We may have to start modifying our statements...first impressions of the
patch on F1 2001 are very impressive. Several posters have mentioned the FF
is better than GPL's and since we know where good FF comes from(good
physics, not pre-programed rumble effects) perhaps Ff1 2001 has risen to
GPL's level.

I remember back in the Nascar 1 or 2 days...when the Pentium 133's first
came out. I sent an email to Papyrus and asked if the new chips could
finally run the sim fast enough to enable full fields with full detail...
I believe I called them 'MONSTER' chips<<compared to P100's they were>>
the quick answer was ....NO!
