GPL demo: Lotus car setup question

by Ice » Mon, 19 Apr 1999 04:00:00

I recently downloaded the GPL demo, and I've been driving the Lotus around
Watkins Glen. Although I can appreciate the realism and 'feel' of the car, I
haven't been able to drive a really fast lap just yet. My best time so far is
1.10.43, but I mainly get times around 1.12.00 and above (if I don't spin, that
is!). By the way, I use a MS Freestyle Pro, which is pretty un-orthodox I
suppose. You have to tilt the thing in mid-air for steering! I'll get me a wheel
someday...

I'm sure there's a lot of room for improvement in my driving, since I only just
started playing GPL.  But I downloaded a 'below 1.04' replay somewhere, to see
how it's done, and it struck me that the Lotus in the replay seemed to have
better grip than my 'standard' Lotus. The car seemed more responsive to braking,
and more stable at high speed corners (less tyre 'screaming').

So is a different car setup a must, or can these killer laptimes also be
achieved with the default setup? I also downloaded some different setups, but I
don't know where to put the .lo1 file. Is a special editor needed here?

Any help is appreciated.

The car sticks better due to different shock-spring-ride height combinations.
And the .lo1 file is to be put in the x:\sierra\GPL\players\Your
Name\Setups\watglen directory.

Thanks. I was looking for a .lo1 file in that directory (to overwrite), but that
doesn't seem necessary.

With the default setup I've somehow managed a 1:05.78 at WG
and a 1:29.11 at Monza, so faster times are possible.

If you're using automatic gears then your braking is
seriously hampered when changing down. By making the move
to manually gears you improve your braking as well as your
acceleration.

Until recently I was using automatic gears but since
changing to manual I would say I've saved around 1 second
per minute of lap time almost immediately.

Low 1:06 is the best an average driver can do in the WG demo.
