GPL Demo Questions

by Doug Bur » Wed, 22 Jul 1998 04:00:00

I have a few questions about the GPL Demo:

1.  Is there any way to figure out how fast you are going?  I am of the
opinion that having a digital speed indicator or even an analogue one
would greatly help my driving in this game...

2.  Which of the cars in the demo is easiest to keep on the track?

3.  What resolutions does the demo support?  Is it only 640x480x16
color?

4.  Where on the web can I download some replays of good laps?

5.  Is it true that this game has dropped to Xmas 98 release date?

6.  Has anyone found any hacks for this demo worth performing?  I
remember that someone figured out how to get a 2nd track out of the
Motorhead demo...

BTW, I do follow this NG but have been ignoring the GPL posts because I
only recently became interested in it.

Thanks in advance...
Doug

Answers:-

1.  Yes, you can figure it out by doing a calculation of time against
distance, which will give your lap speeds.  But I hope "no" speedo in
the final product. They didn't have speedometers and they are totally
unnecessary.  You don't need to know the actual mph in order to drive
the car properly and at the optimum.

2.  The All-American Racers Weslake-Eagle.

3.  It supports, in 3DFX, up to 1024 x 768 and 800 x 600 in Rendition.

4.  No idea.

5.  Possibly.  Supposedly now September/October.

6.  No, but why would you want to "hack" it?

I don't think the real drivers had speedo's during this era? so would
would we need them? you can drive the car on or near the limit without
a speedo! BTW, you can work out your speed mathamatically by
multiplying the distance travelled by the laptime recorded. (if you
measure the distance in miles the answer is mph, if you measure the
distance in kilometres the answer is in kph!)

The slowest, or the one with the least power output (bhp)? from the on
screen info all the three cars have the same bhp in the G2 & G3
classes, but the Brabham has the least power in the GP class (340bhp),

output as the Eagle, but at lower revs.

I think it supports 800 x 600 with 3Dfx, not sure about Rendition?
Probably at least the same resolution if not more?

Try....  http://gpl.gamestats.com/

or....   http://www.sierra.com/studios/papyrus/

Or....   http://www.ogr.com/

Don't know, I hope not!

Why would you want to hack it? its a sim, not an arcade game!

Salve Doug !!!

I don't think you really need one. BTW: F1-cars IMHO never had one ;-)
DB>
DB> 2.  Which of the cars in the demo is easiest to keep on the track?

IMHO the Brabham, but I prefer the Lotus. Much more fun !
DB>
DB> 3.  What resolutions does the demo support?  Is it only 640x480x16
DB> color?

16 colors ??? ROTFL !

DB> 4.  Where on the web can I download some replays of good laps?

Yep, go to gpl.gamestats.com. There are REALLY hot laps you can learn
a lot from...

DB> 5.  Is it true that this game has dropped to Xmas 98 release date?

I definitely do NOT hope so. September should be the release date.

Also, man mailt sich...
