Problems with centering with MS Sidewinder FFB Wheel (USB)

by Toni Art » Sat, 04 Aug 2001 06:26:06

Hi,

I have problems with "return to center" effect with my new MS Sidewinder
wheel. The centering works fine with the bundled "Need for Speed V:
Porche Unleashed" and also with "Nascar Racing" and "Grand Prix 3". With
all other games I have tried so far ("NFS III", "NFS IV", "Colin McRae
Rally (version 1)") the centering does not work, which makes it quite
difficult to actually feel the road. The collision and road effects work
nicely, though.

Also the "return to center" does not always have equal force on both
directions with "NFS V" (for example stronger centering from right), but
that gets fixed after the next collision or other force event.

I have Windows 98 with DirectX 8.0a. I read somewhere that FF effects on
DirectX 8 might be somehow broken, but it's impossible to downgrade to
DirectX 7.0a, and reinstalling everything is not an option.

If you reply via mail, please remove the 'nospam' from the address.

I think the problem you are experienceing is with how certain games
setup the FFB. N4 disables the centreing force too, it's done that way
because it is supposed to be more realistic. It should be an option
though, IMO. Some games just have crappy FFB, for example; STCC2 gives
me lots of centreing forces, but I feel nothing else.

Isn't there some problem with installing the sidewinder4.0 software on
Win2K? I get centering and FFB effects in GP3 on my MS FF wheel under
Win98se. I'm using directx8.1.
