Does anybody have any experience with MS Sidewinder FF wheel USB version?
I read some early reviews, but probably MS improved OS support.
How is it under Windows XP?
Thanks in advance,
Igor

You never tried any of the more expensive wheels..?
You never tried an Act Labs wheel of the lower price wheels..?
The MS Sidewinder FF usb will either work, work ok-ish or not work with XP
depending on your luck.

It will work OK, but can't you get the new MOMO Racing Force? It should be
in the same price range as MS FF, and it's a better wheel.
Jone.
The MSFFW USB is probably the best consumer grade wheel you can buy. It is
built very solid and has excellent pedals.
The software is a little dated and of odd design, but it does function fine
under XP.
Ignore the 'warning' it gives about being for Windows 98 only. Microsoft
has actually WHQL certified this software in it's current condition, error
message and all. Life is easy when you write the rules and own the keys to
the lab :)

All I can give is my experience - got the gameport version when I got
GPL, liked it, got the USB version, liked it, got XP, had trouble
getting GPL to like XP, succeeded, still like the MSFF. To be honest,
all the "wheel X is better than wheel Y" stuff is subjective - how
can it not be? Maybe if I was an alien type I'd feel differently, but
I have no intention of changing my wheel, to MOMO or anything else. I
love the MSFF.

Above address *is* valid - but snip spamtrap to get me to *read*!
Mine works perfectly under XP. For the $100 that I paid for it, it's a
great wheel.

I like:
- the digital/optical sensor on the wheel (no calibration issues, no
dirty potentiometers)
- the overall robustness
- the clamping system (the wheel is easily put away, sometimes I do work
with this PC)
- the pedals, although not outstanding, are much better than most of the
competition
- the wheel travel (~270) is large enough
I do not like:
- (mild) increase on CPU load (not really an issue these days)
- the driver software only available on CD (no download, no updates from
MS)
- the driver might be WHQL certified... but still gives you an error
message on installation (it works fine, but still...)
Typical case of the Microsoft hardware division being much better than
their software division. But it is not connected to MS not being a
harware monopoly, is it ?
Hope this helps,
Xavier
