Sidewinder 4.0 software problems (USB FF Wheel)

by RocketMa » Mon, 10 Dec 2001 05:01:30

I purchased a new Microsoft USB FF Wheel last week, but since installing
the accompanying version 4 of the Sidewinder software have been unable to
access the Control Panel / Game Controllers to set up the wheel.
The Sidewinder software seems to install without a problem, but when I try
to run Control Panel through the software or through Control Panel / Game
Controllers the program starts, but almost instantly crashes without opening
the window and outputs a sound (as it crashes). The following message was
output the first time I tried to access Game Controllers.

SWTRAYV4 has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

SWTRAYV4 caused an invalid page fault in
module HID.DLL at 017f:7d06170d.

I have version 3.02 of Sidewinder already on my system for my gameport FF
wheel, and USB joystick and USB gamepad. Although the new version is not
supposed to affect the old version I tried to un-install the old version 3
from my system. I was unable to complete un-installation as the following
message occurred.

UNINSTAL caused an invalid page fault in

I thought I might try another copy of the latest version 4 Sidewinder
software but I have been unable to find a copy to download. My system specs
are:- DELL PII 450, 384MB RAM, 2 x 14.4 GB HDs, nVidia Geforce2MX (64MB),
Voodoo II (12MB), Windows 98 (not SE), DirectX 8.0a.
Any help/advice would be much appreciated. TIA.

You need Win98SE being Win98FE suck with must of USB device out there

Personally, I have had ZERO problems with Windows 98 First Edition, and in
fact avoid Win98SE like the plague due to the engineering problems within it
that MS has never, and probably never will, fix.

Win98FE, with all the appropriate patches, has always been the most stable
version of Win9x I've ever used.

I HATE supporting Win98SE on a large scale (which, unfortunately, I have to
do).

That would be the System Tray extension.  I would look for some sort of
conflict.

You didn't mention your OS version...

Ah, yes I did mention my OS - Win 98 FE (not SE).
What sort of conflict, Larry? Where should I be looking? Device Manager??
I didn't notice any conflict in Device Manager when I had a quick glance.
  Thanks for the reply.

My OS - Win 98 FE, all uppdates...
P2 450, Matrox g400 32 m, Sb-live, 256 ram, 8 GB HD... dx 8.1
It will work without the software, but there'll be no FF then :( ..
I tried it, unistalled all software... and just plugged it in...the system
whants win98 cd
for some usb files..... then checked it out in thrustm. propanel.. important
to ..give it ID 1.
Then I drove some laps of GPL ... but there's no ff ...
It seems like there is some problem working with Joy.cpl to.... ??
Until there is a solution for the bug or problem (Microsoft?) it's better
then nothing...
Seems like it won't work with XP either... or???
getting my new PC thirsday ... P4 1.7 ... Win XP .. etc..

I think most of us would agree that WinME is the OS that should have never
been.  Absolutely DREADFUL stuff.

No, no...  Software Conflict.

It sounds like something is conflicting with your SideWinder
extensions/control panel.

I'd first see if there is any other controller software installed, and try
uninstalling it first.
