GPL and 233 Pentium with 16 meg TNT - will it work?

by The Thomas' » Wed, 18 Jul 2001 23:30:35

I am trying to use a PC that I have (a P 233) to play GPL.  A friend
recently gave me his 16 meg tnt card and some more ram.  I loaded everything
up including the 1.2 patch and vroc but my frame rates are like 16 fps
(max).  I am using the direct 3d patch and have all my graphics settings
turned off.  I am running in 640X480.  My mirrors and car details are all on
low.   My friend has a p300 with tnt and had little problems achieving 36
fps.  Am I missing something?

I have been using the latest detonator drivers from nvideo to play.  Could
it be that these drivers are not as reliable as an older version.

Any help would be appreciated.

The difference could be the Video Card and the Processor.

I was running GPL on a PII 233 with a Voodoo2 8MB running in Glide.  I was
getting about 25fps at 800x600

You have a P233 and you say your friend used a P300. The original pentiums
didn't go up to 300 did they? Are you sure he isnt using a PII 300?

I ran GPL successfully on a PII 233, which is 85% faster than a P233
according to norton benchmark. Also, the d3d patch you need to run it on the
TNT card doesnt give as good FPS as a Voodoo2 would, using GPLs original
3dfx driver.

So, I would say a P233 and TNT would be too slow for GPL, seeing as I only
just managed to run it on my PII 233 + voodoo2.

Hi ya

the TNT cards dont like the latest Detonator drivers, they are made for GF2
cards.
I recommend getting an earlier version driver and trying that.
I currently run a TNT2 M64 card, with 2.08 drivers.
Here is a link that shows comparisons of drivers for the TNT2 M64, search
the site, there might also be one for the TNT too.

I would agree Lol.

When P233s were the norm the Hercules Thriller (rendition) was the card to
have over the voodoo2. As you say the voodoo2 will be quicker than the TNT.

The cheap option maybe finding a secondhand Thriller card (I bet there are a
few on this newsgroup!), this should run GPL ok out of the box but I guess
you would not be able to run some of the add on tracks and graphics from
over the years.

Indeed the latest drivers are optimised for the latest cards
(GF2/GF3).  So far I've found the best drivers for my Xentor32 (TNT 2
Ultra) to be 5.xx (can't remember exactly which ones).  I've tried
just about every major driver release since, but they have never
offered any performance improvement and in most cases they've reduced
performance!  I think the 2.08 drivers are also pretty good for Gpl.

So the advice is find some older drivers and give them a try.  However
you may find that your PC is simply not up to delivering decent
framerates (36 fps) in Gpl.

I have run GPL on a P200mmx (overclocked to 233MHz) with a Creative Voodoo
Banshee card very well, even at 800x600, with track crowds off, mirror
detail at min & the frame rate adjusted, tire detail off, minimum sounds.
But I had most all of the graphic goodies to make the race enjoyable, and
bias set to the max.

It was the first computer that I ran GPL on. Also tried the Rendition card
and had mucho problems with it, would not install on a fresh install of
Win9x (lockup in standard vga mode). I had to install the OS with a old
Western Digital standard VGA card and then add the Hercules Rendition card.
Also if I remember the card was very fussy about running at 800x600, it did
not work well at 640x480, even on several motherboards. Never have liked
Hercules's products since, that aggravating. LOL

I first tried GPL on a STB 4mb Velocity 128 video card in software mode with
nothing graphic wise on, what an ugly mess. LOL
