How do I get higher fps in GPL on P2 233???

by Doug Gordo » Tue, 03 Nov 1998 04:00:00

I've got the same system. I can get a decent rate by turning off the mirrors (cars only, no textures), turning off skid marks and cloud textures, and also the driver arm and***pit textures. This degrades the graphics, but my rate is now in the mid-30's. A PII-266 will go into my current moboard, but I don't know if that's much of an upgrade. The only other path is a complete moboard swap which means new memory, etc., etc.

I'm running GPL on a P2 233 with 32MB SDRAM and a Creative labs 12MB Voodoo2 card. I can only get at most 22 or 26 fps while racing at Monza with 17 drivers and most details on. I only have 4 sounds activated. What can I do to get my fps? Should I get a higher speed processor? More RAM? I'd hate to disable some graphics. This game should run at great on this machine! What's up? Any help will help!!

I too have PII 233, but I have a Thriller graphics card. I'm getting a solid
36 fps hosting multiplayer with only the drivers arms turned off, and cars
and track in the mirrors, bias full on in 800x600, everything else on. I do
have 64 Meg of RAM. I'm considering a Celeron 333 (not sure about OC the
300A), just to get a bit more.

Very fun simulator!

You have two choices since you already have the highest spec. Voodoo II
card.  Buy a much faster processor (450) and you still won't get full fps.
Buy an 8MB Rendition video card (to replace your primary video card, not the
Voodoo II), and you probably will, but even with the Rendition card, you may
need a bit more CPU.

Pure3DII (12 meg), and at 800x600 with a full field my fps is pretty
much locked at 36 except at the start and when buzzing past the pits.
This is with all graphics, full mirrors, the detail slider maxed, and
number of sounds set at 6.  It drops into the 32-33 range with a few
(more than 2) cars nearby.
