Geforce 2 GTS locks up in NASCAR 4 and GPL - HELP!

by John Cauthe » Wed, 12 Dec 2001 05:13:24

I've recently installed a Visiontek 32 MB Geforce 2 GTS card in my system,
but it seems to have some sort of problem when running demanding D3D and
OpenGL applications.  Most noteable are NASCAR 4 and GPL.  If I have
anything greater than 1X AGP enabled, it's not long before the video goes
dark and the audio goes into a repetitive looping noise.  The only way out
is to reboot!  Even the enabling of sidebanding at 1X makes it unstable.

I'm running 23.11 drivers, but I went back and tried my 12.41 drivers just
for kicks.  That seemed to help some, but the problem remains and is still
intolerable.  Is there a work around for this or am I the only one having a
problem?  I'm hearing that the 21.83 drivers are perhaps more stable.
Should I go back and install them?

Thanks in advance!

What are your system temps like, particularly your case temp?  This is
almost always a heat related issue, and I solved mine by adding two
additional case fans to help move air through the case.  Does your video
card have a fan on it or just a heatsink?

Good luck,
Ryan

It's a Celeron 900 overclocked to 1200 at 1.85 volts.  I also have a Sound
Blaster Live Value card.  I'm running on an ABit BH6 motherboard, and I'm
using 256 MB of Micron PC-133 RAM.

Thanks,

John

System temp is 86 deg F, case temperature is 77 degrees F (never higher).
I've actually got the case off the enclosure right now just to preclude that
possibility.

My video card has a fan on the heatsink.  Is there a way to monitor the card
temp?  If so, where's the best place to monitor it?

Thanks!

The BH6 seems to be the problem here.
I used to have one and loved it, it's a great board. But it also is
pre GeForce, and seems to have too weak powersupply to the AGP port.
I experienced the same problems as you, and the only thing that
helped me was replacing the BH6 for a modern board that is build to
supply powerhungry modern graphics cards.
Never had the problem again.

I see... now that you say it, that makes a lot of sense, Rene.  Also, my
system only has a 250 watt power supply; but I don't know if that has any
bearing on it or not.  There's no way to regulate the power the BH6 sends to
the AGP slot?  I really like the MB, I hate to part with it...

Thanks for your help!

John

I don't know about monitoring the video card, I suppose you could buy a temp
sensor and plug it in to your motherboard if if has the ability to do so.
But from reading about your system and also the temperatures you gave, I
think Rene is right - your motherboard is to blame.

I'd have to look into the motherboard temp sensor options.  Having read
Rene's comments, I then did a search on Google for BH6/Geforce 2 GTS
problems and find that others are having the same problem to some degree or
another.  It's funny, my Geforce 2 MX 400 didn't have a problem at all.  I
guess it's the added demands of the GTS that's at play here.   It seems like
there would be a way I could boost the supply voltage and/or power to the
AGP slot... I'm going to look into that option for a while.  The fiddler in
me can't resist this challenge! :-)

Simple--stop overclocking and see if the problem goes away.  It likely will.

will.

I"ve ruled out overclocking as the problem.  I can stick my Geforce 2 MX in
this same computer and it doesn't miss a beat.  I think Rene is onto
something concerning my ABit Bh6's inability to supply the GTS adequate
power via the AGP slot.  My FSB is 133 MHz, which sets the card up with the
optimum clock speed.

That doesnt rule out overclocking
The combination of oc' and the nvidia 32mb video hp may be the culprit
Youll have to turn off the oc' With the GF2 card and test to be sure
The Mx card doesnt have near the hp so the oc' isnt affected (near as much)

much)

Okay, just to rule out oc'ing the CPU as the fault, I switched the FSB back
to default (100 Mhz).  It didn't make any difference whatsover.  The crashes
occur with the same frequency and the same symptoms.

I did notice something that I find even more peculiar.  The GTS will
actually operate longer before shutting down if I run it at 4X AGP, versus
2X AGP!?  It runs steady (at either FSB speed) with AGP 1X selected.
However, if I go in and enable sidebanding, I'll get a shutdown in 15 to 20
minutes.

The further I go with this, the evidence I'm finding to support Rene's
analysis of this problem, ie., inadequate power to the AGP slot.

Thanks for your suggestions Tim, it did help to exclude these possibilities!

I might just stick a 300 watt power supply in there before I do anything
else.  The 250 watt job that's in there now is 5 years old and has seen
plenty of use.  I'll let you know how this turns out; I'm sure I'm not the
only one dealing with this issue concerning the GTS card and older MB's.

Mucho thanko!
