I just downloaded the GPL demo and it runs like a slide show on my
machine with the graphics turned up.  I have a P-233 w/64mb ram and a
Matrox Mystique 3d card.  There is an ad in the paper for a Diamond
Monster 3dfx card for $69 (after rebate).  Would this card make a big
difference in my performance?  Or would it be worth it to shell out more
for the Voodoo 2 cards coming out now.

The Monster card will make a huge difference. I drive the GPL demo on a K6 200,
32 MB and a similar 3dfx card as the Monster (the Orchid Righteous). It runs
with every graphics on, except the racing groove (cause I think it's to visible
to be realistic :o) ), at 640*480 or 800*600, and my best time is a 1:07.4. I
believe you will need a faster CPU if you're going to notice a significant
difference between a Voodoo 1 and a Voodoo 2 card, so the only difference you
get with a Voodoo 2 is the possibility to drive at 1024*768, since it has at
least 8 MB memory.

/Christer, hope this helps :o)

A 3Dfx card makes a lot of a difference. The demo was virtually
unplayable on my P166 before I got a Monster 3D. Now it's very smooth
and beautiful to look at.
The only alternative for the GPL demo would be a Rendition-based card.
The final release will support other 3D chipsets via D3D, I believe.
As for choosing between Voodoo 1 and 2, I understand that only the
faster systems (PII-233 and above) will see the full benefit of a
Voodoo 2 over the older model. A Monster 2 or similar will give you
higher resolutions, however. Personally, I don't think you can't go
wrong with a Monster 1 for $69.-

my config: amd k6-200, 48 MB, DM Voodoo I card, el-cheapo 2mb S3 card. GPL
runs very smoothly on my system (except for when you hit the dirt),
so I guess it must be the voodoo I. ;-)

A Monster 1 3dfx card puts you in a whole new world ! It appears that a 3dfx
card is mandatory for all sims released after 1/1/98.

3d quality varies from sim to sim. I upgraded to 32mb of ram at the same
time.
Therefore I think your 64mb ram will be more than adequate.

YES, YES, YES, get a 3Dfx card (either a Voodoo1 or Voodoo2) but it
*WILL* make a big difference.

With a K6 200 (clocked to 225) a 4Mb Voodoo1 3Dfx card and 64Mb SDram
GPL flies on my pc just fine.

Or, if you are mainly concerned with running GPL and other Papyrus/Sierra
sims, get a Rendition card. It'll replace your Matrox, and run GPL better
than any card on the market. I have a Stealth II in a P166MMX based machine,
with 32 meg of RAM, and run the demo at 800x600 with all details on, and it
works great. I have a friend with a 233 /Pure 3D combe, and mine looks much
better and runs just as smooth...a Hercules Thriller 3D is a hell of a deal
right now..

Ho-hum.

Well, the press beta release as provided by Sierra to my journo flatmate
doesn't do so hot at all with other cars around. GP2 has a new challanger in
First Corner slowdown ;)

P2-350 Voodoo2.

Well he must have something wrong with his computer. With a P266 Celeron, a
Diamond Stealth 220, 19 AI cars, and all graphics on at 800x600 the slowdown
at the first corner is barely noticeable. At the standing start frame rate
is about 15fps, by the first corner at Monza it is 27fps. I would have to
say that on a PII 350 it should be allot better!

Thanks
John

Might I suggest that you wait until the released version before leaping
to conclusions on the basis of a beta release?

(It's a wonder that conclusions are not an endangered species,
considering the number that have been leapt at, particularly in this
forum!)

I just bought and installed the Diamond Monster 3dfx card today and all I
can say is.. wow!!  What a difference.  Not only does the GPL demo run
smoothly at high graphics but my other favorite sims (especially F15) are
like new games.   Thanks for the advice, guys.

Glad you like it !!

If you want to see a game that is TOTALLY unplayable and awesome w/the
card, try Carmageddon.

I originally downloaded the demo and then trashed it when playing before
I got my Monster3D..

Then once I got the M3D, I couldn't believe it was the same game.

Enjoy...

awesome w/the m3d card...
