I've always been a flight sim guy - the only racing sim that I've enjoyed so
far was Grand Turismo on the Play Station. (OK stop the hisses) The
televison graphics suck, but the feel is there, and then there's those
wonderful replays.
Well now I'm hooked on GPL - crank up the speakers, listen to those V-12's
sing, the track whizs by, and the feeling of being at speed is very real.
What's even better, is that you don't need a PII 450 with dual Voodoo's to
enjoy frame rates that let me concentrate on the game, without being jerked
to reality by random seconds of frozen time. Keeping in mind that I have not
gotten good enough to keep up with the pack (I suspect that racing with more
than 5 cars will degrade fps).
I have two systems: One is an Intel 200 ok'ed to 225 with Diamond 220
(Rendition 2100) and Diamond Voodoo 2 8mg, and 64mb RAM. On this system the
Rendition ranges between 17-27 fps, average seems to be about 20, with a low
of 12 and high of 36. Image quality with the Rendition is superior over the
Voodoo2. Colors are brighter, detail is sharper, and shapes have less
proportional errors (circles are circles). I run both cards at 800x600. The
Voodoo runs alittle quicker, maybe 5 more fps, but because the image seems
washed out in comparison to the Rendition, I always use the Rendition.
My other system is a AMD-233, 64mb RAM, and S3 2d card.
I recently installed up a Magic 3d Voodoo 1 (Generic Import Brand)
for this computer. This board was selling for $60 and I bought it on
impulse. Not bad - max resolution is 640x480, but fps is up there in the
25-35 range.
I have CH Pro Pedals, which work fine for brake and gas. Anyone have
feedback onf CH steering wheels? Or any other brands?
:-) Yes I like this sim well enough to go out a buy a steering wheel -
something I never thought I would do!
Enjoy
