Have you tried the beta OpenGL rasterizer?  Get it from: www.papy.com

If you're in the market for a new video card, you'd be hard pressed to
beat the TNT from NVidia (OEM cards can be had for as little as $115),
though currently for GPL both Rendition and 3Dfx have their advantages.

Hi, my Pll 233mhz64mg rig is suffering under the weight of GPL and I'm only
seeing frame rates in the 8-12 fps range with most graphics turned off,in
the training mode.Oh, yeah, and the car looks wider than the
track.....kidding.N2 has run fine for me on this 'puter, but GPL is a
handful when I can drive much faster than the screen can show pictures. So,
do I need a better video card?, I was told that this was the latest and
greatest card when I bought my rig...drivers are fresh,is this likely to be
the best I see from my current setup? Do I need an accelerator card, or a
video card, or both? What about Rendition, Papy speaks very highly of this
card, and I've heard others say that it gets rid of the jaggies, which I've
got.I am willing to invest in my *** experirence, but need a little
insight into which way to go....N2(N3?) & GPL are what I want to play, so
I'd like to have the system optimized for these two.......TIA      Ed

Oh, Yeah one more thing, I saw a post where Mea***er clearly expresses his
opinion of DirectX 6.0....I had just updated to 6.0 the day before
installing GPL, in an effort to cure an unrelated sound problem in my
daughter's preschool program....per tech at Knowledge Adventure.....didn't
fix that problem, did I get myself a new one? Any and all opinions
welcome......Thanks Again, Ed

I've got a very similar setup to yours.

PII 266, 64meg ram, Viper V330 (Nvida 128 4meg pci) 2d/3d graphics card.

I downloaded the OpenGL Beta2 drivers and am also running DX6

I've found that in training mode with ALL graphics turned on 640x480 I only
get about 10-12 fps, with most of the graphics turned down, I can get a fps
of about 16-18, but can't seem to crack 20fps.

I would suspect, that as twitchy as these cars are, you'd need a minimum of
25-30 fps to control the car effectively, and be able to be racey/driveable.

When I upgraded from a P133 to the PII 266 games like N2, ICRII, GP2 and
NFS2 became SOOOO playable that it was like night and day, I was able to
enable full graphics and get max framerates that the games can deliver!

I'm also considering a VoodooII upgrade but am wondering how much more it
will do for me... Or.... Would a faster system or overclocked system do more
than a bigger/better video card ???

If you do upgrade... Please do me a favor.... And post the differences
you've experienced by adding the Voodoo piggyback card to your existing
Veloicty 128 ?!

I'll do the same if/when I upgrade.

Thank you!

On the Riva128 you'll want to use TossHighestMip=1 in the core.ini

GPL/Frame Rates/STB Velocity 128 Questions

Eric thanks!

I also set the MipFiltering to 2 and the MirrorsEvery at 8.

It's helped, but.....

A strange thing that I've noticed.... When I goto graphics the accelerator
option, it's set to 'none' rather than OpenGL....

I change it to OpenGL, exit and restart but it's still on 'None'!

The 'APP.INI' file shows the lastRasterizerDLL set to rastOGL.dll, so I
assume i'm running OpenGL, but am I really ????

From what I've heard, and from my experience with the demo, prior to the
OpenGL patch, software mode is virtually unplayable, even on P II 450's,
with 128meg of RAM! So.... I assume i'm running OpenGL, and that the games
settings are just not showing it.

The problem is.... The 3d graphic options of: anti-aliasing, dynamic
lighting and specular highlights are greyed out, so I'm not too sure...

Anyone else encounter this problem?

Thank you in advance for the help!

Same thing here with a Riva 128 card. The game just doesn't remember
the setting after a re-start - and you have to re-start to make the
setting come into effect... This is with the card manufacturer's
newest drivers (including OpenGL). I haven't tried with nVidia's
reference drivers, though.

Hi Guys, I'm curious where you find the ini. files and settings you're
talking about.....I'd like to experiment with changes and see what effect
they may have.....before I go plonk big bucks down for new
hardware.....which I plan to do anyway, eventually, but I wanna drive
now,dammit! TIA   Ed

Do you see colored helmets?  If so your in GL.  If they are all white
you're in software.
