GPL--Frame rate?

GPL--Frame rate?

by Brock Bolt » Thu, 22 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I haven't bought GPL yet, and was wondering what kind of performance
(i.e.--frame rates)I can expect on my system.  I have a PII266 with 32Mb of
RAM.  I don't have a 3d card as of yet, and that is what I am concerned
about.  Will it run acceptably without the 3d card?  If not, which one
would do the job?

GPL--Frame rate?

The answer has to be 'No' - I run a 166mmx 32mb ram with a voodoo diamond
monster card - getting frame rates of 20-22 fps on training mode, around 18fps
race with 6 other cars - still very,very playable though-especially training -
can comfortably run Monaco with full detail on training and thoroughly enjoy it
- I shudder to think how fantastic the game is with a 300 or above
processor-lucky ***s!!
Get yourself a 3dfx card and revel in the experience!!

get a 3d card, on a 266 it would seem that a hercules thriller 8 meg would
be the choice. you may want to pick up some more ram as well. with both you
could expect resonable framerates with near minmum graphics and 5-10 ai
cars. I upped to a 300 and got most graphics and 10 cars with good fps. it
wasn't till i got to a 374 that it got real good and now at 450 its
everything on at full fps.

You really need a 3d card. More ram would be good too. A 266 will get you good
frame rates with most graphics and minimum cars.  More cars = less graphics. To
get good fps(30+) with almost all graphics and a full field of ai cars you need
350-400mhz.
As for the 3d card I along with a noted beta tester highly reccomend a Thriller
8meg. GPL and other papy sims are written for the chips (rendition2200) in
these cards. If you also want performance in Quake and other games get a
VooDoo2.
Have fun, John
