ACT LAB question

by MadDAW » Thu, 15 Nov 2001 22:11:21

Currently I have the Logitech FF wheel and I'm thinking about
upgrading/updating with ACT LABS. I'm think about going one of two ways.

The first (cheap) way is to get the new ACT LABS pedals. Is there any
problems doing this? From reading their site it sounds like to me you need a
game capable of seeing 2 controllers to use a set up like this. I don't
think this would be a problem with any of the titles I have, but does anyone
know of some were it is a problem? The nice part about this is I can spread
the cost out over time although it would cost more in the end.

The second way is to get the full ACT LABS package. Can you get the new
pedals without getting the old ones? It looked/sounded like that you would
still get the old ones as well. Also if you don't get the old ones and still
want a split axis setup will it wok ok? I took it from the website that with
the new pedals hooked up in place of the originals you can only have
combined brake/accel axis. Can I hook up the new pedals with USB and not
have the originals under the desk? I have limited floor space and two sets
of pedal under my desk would be a problem.

Yes this would work, but do it fast, then again you may be too late
already as they are/were running out fast of the current stock. ACT
Labs is hoping to have another shipment before the holidays.

You can not order the wheel without the old pedals. Yes, from what I
understand you are correct on the split axis with using USB.

Yeah website is showing back ordered now :(   Just trying to make up my mind
what I want to do. I was thinking about TSW because I want a larger dia
wheel, but I like FF as well. I did find a website that shows you how to
install a aftermarket wheel to an ACT LAB wheel so I think I may have a
winner, now I just got to pay for it. :)

The Logitech MOMO is pretty decent.

I'm using the new 3-pedal Act Labs system with a Logitech FF wheel and
it works fine.  It's split axis (the clutch, brake, and throttle are
each a different axis) and plugs into the USB port.

The Act Labs pedals show up as a separate controller, so I assume
they'll only work with sims that can recognize a second controller.  GPL
works fine, as does F1 2001.

I think you'll still need to have the old pedals, unless you can remove
them from the Act Labs wheel.  In the case of the Logitech, the power
and other circuits run through the pedals, so I have to leave them
attached.  But I put them back out of the way, since they aren't used
unless I want to run some game that can't see two controllers.

Hopefully you can find someplace for them, maybe leaning up against a
wall or something.

The AL wheel will work with the pedals unplugged from the wheel.

Bear in mind, there are several games that don't recognize two controlers,
even if you get the AL wheel & pedals separately, as I was thinking of
doing.  I believe the list includes at least some of the following: GPL, N4,
NH, F1 2001, and Rally Trophy.  The MOMO wheel is starting to look a lot
more attractive.

Just received my Act Labs Performance Pedals.

Have I got this right, there is no way to get separate axis on pedals in
games that don't support two controllers?

I hook up the pedals USB, they are a separate device and only those game
supporting two controllers work.

I hook up the pedals to the RS Force, and no separate axis.

This pretty much sucks. I'm going to use my LWFF (with it's heavily
modded pedals!) and the Act Labs pedals, I guess, and will only be able
to use the Act Labs pedals in games that support two controllers.

If I'm missing something, can someone tell me what?

Right now I'm doing rally games, RC2000, CMR2, and hopefully later this
week, RT. Can't use the new pedals, haven't been able to use them YET!
Sigh......

There have also been a few reports of the brake pedal on the new performance
pedals breaking.
Reports are still limited however maybe there is a design flaw?  Check Act
Labs forums for details.  Hopefully it's just a result of people being
overly e***d pressing the brakes too hard :)

Follow up, somewhat!

I hear on AL Forums that I can hook up my pedals to the Force RS, and
the clutch to USB adapter/USB. With an old v2.1 cartridge (nearly ALL
out there?), I'm s'posed to be able to get split axis for gas/brake and
have wheel/gas/brake show as one device..

It's a PITA to uninstall Logitech software, plug all the AL stuff back
up and try, but I'm gonna give it a go soon. If that works, and I can
get separate axis for gas/brake, I'll be relatively happy since I can
use it that way in games that don't support two controllers.

If it doesn't work, uninstall all AL stuff, reinstall all Logi stuff,
sigh......again.

GPL and N4 do recognize more than one controller.  At least on my PC,
under Windows 98, they do.

That's two.

Forgot to mention all those rally sims that may or may not recognize two
controllers.  (In the Rally Trophy demo, I couldn't even get it to recognize
one joystick, much less a wheel and/or one set of pedals...or, as they spell
it universally on the Internet, "peddles.")

Follow up.

Sure enough, if you connect AL Performance Pedal pedal connector to the
wheel, and connect the clutch connector to the USB adapter, you get two
controllers in Game Controllers, one is just the clutch. The wheel/pedal
thing can have split axis, so it works in games that support only one
controller and still let you have separate axis control.

Cool, I'm happy now. I like the AL pedals WAY better in the Rally sims
I'm currently playing. I kind of like my modded LWFF wheel a little
better, it's a bit smoother with the ball bearings in it, but the LWFF
pedals, even heavily modded with springs and bumpers, suck compared to
these AL pedals. I will learn to love the Force RS wheel. Forces are
nice, stronger (?), just not as smooth, kind of notchy. But, even tho'
I've had it for a year or so, I haven't used it much because the
original AL pedals sucked worse than the original LWFF pedals!! I think
that's telling us something!

FWIW:  In my experience, from that list, GPL, N4 and F1 2001 all DO recognize
multiple controllers.  NH does not.  Don't know about Rally Trophy (although the
demo apparently does not).

I have three controllers and in XP they all showed up beautifully in Control
Panel on install as well as in the Rally Trophy Demo.  Configuration was
flawless in RT for me.  I see these in the demo:  Logitech Wingman Formula
Force GP - Act Labs High Performance Pedals - Act Labs RS Shifter -
Keyboard - Mouse.  I may be slightly misquoting the descriptions as I am at
the office, but I was impressed with how RT pulled all the exact information
and settings directly from Control Panel and DirectX.
