GPL and a joystick??

by Michael St.Julie » Sat, 20 Mar 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

Just picked up GPL again after upgrading my system.  It seems to run really
well now on my AMD K6-2 350 mhz.  My question is that I use a Sidewinder
Precision Pro Joystick....does anyone else use a joystick for this game?  If
so what are some good setups.  Its very hard to control with a joystick.
But I can't afford to spend $100 on a wheel.

GPL and a joystick??

Michael,

I have a wheel and  a MS Precision Pro.  The wheel broke about a month and a
half ago, and I am now using the joystick.  I use button 1 for the throttle,
button 2 for the brake, B button for shifting up and A button for shifting
down.

I have try using the joystick axis for throttle and brake, but I can't get
the hang of it (trying to steer with the joystick pushed forward is WAY too
touchy for me).  Others find it better (and faster) with the forward and
back as the throttle and brake.

When I had the wheel, my best time at Monza was 1:30.10.  With the joystick,
if I get in a rhythm I can consistently pull low 1:32's to high 1:31's. (It
took a tonne of practice though)

The problem with using button 1 and button 2 for throttle and brake, is that
braking help and throttle help are both automatically on, even if you have
them turned off.  This will slow you down.

I tried, because my old T2 wheel was getting so flaky I couldn't use
it in GPL. But found the Sidewinder just too tight, hard to drive GPL
is a straight line especially when slowing down. Finally bought a new
wheel yesterday.

I use the Sidewinder as a controller - I have a large callous on my
left index finger from pushing down the slot in front of the "thottle
slider" on the Sidewinder which is mapped to the brakes.  This
prevents the brakes locking up as I push the brakes on:-).

Steering I map to joystick left and right.  Accellerator to Joystick
forward and the brakes (as I said) to the Thottle Slider.  I use
button 1 (the trigger) to change up and button 2(the button near the
POV hat) to change down.  The two buttons on the side - top is mapped
to clutch and bottom to raise arm.  I use the POV hat to look left and
right.

I find with the linearity slider (GPL controls) in the middle I can
get very accurate steering.

Thank you all for your help.  I'll keep trying with my sidewinder for a
little while longer and see what happens.
