What are people using and whats getting the best performance. I've got a
geforce 256 ddr with an athlon 650. I seem to get better framerates with
open gl, is this what others find as well ?

I have a P3-800 with Creative Anniolator Pro (first generations Ge Force
DDR).  I found that I get much better frame rates in Open GL than Direct X.
Make sure you disable "v-sinc" in your Open GL settings.  With v-sinc 'on',
my frame rates were cut in 1/2.

But when I disable my vsync I get stutters and weird graphic glitches like
my car sinking into the turns....

Any suggestions??????

And how do you optimise the OpenGL settings so that it looks as good as D3D?
Or do we just live with the inferior, more pixellated look to get the higher
frame rates?

Marc.

my Viper V770 ultra runs much better on D3D than it does openGL.
I was surprised that my 533 coppermine is running N4 as well as it does.
with just debris and smoke on and 25 cars on the track, i rarely see the
framerate drop below 20. I do see myself upgrading reaaaaaal soon though
Congrats to Papy on a great game so far. My only observation so far if the
same as the rest, slightly buggy AI under certain tracks. That and making my
533 look more like the dinosaur it has become. Oh well, im rambling on, time
fer lunch and a beer before the shootout. See ya

If you have the horsepower, could enable fsaa which would help, most folks
aren't going to have that kind of hp today I think.
For now, I prefer opengl for the performance increase versus the smoother
graphics in d3d.

Hello,

You get better performance out of OpenGL, but I find (for my taste) the
degraded graphics in OpenGL vs D3D is too high.   I run N4 in D3D and
although its a performance hit, its not huge.  The graphics are just much,
much smoother in D3D.

Alot of people are making the mistake of having 24 sounds being heard and
that effects performance as well.  I think 10 to 12 is more than enough for
most people.

Not that much diff between the two on my system--crowds in the stands may
look a little better in D3D but who cares about that?

Yes, D3D looks better (particularly the color saturation), but the
performance hit is unconscionable on my K7-900.

I'm looking at 6 to 10 on my P3-900 system with an ASUS V7700 GeForce2 GTS
32mb card.  However, I gained those fps back by upgrading to Direct X 8a as
DX8 was causing me all kinds of problems.

Scott,

I dodged that particular bullet by avoiding DX8 *and* DX8a.  As has been
noted, um, in these rooms, you don't have to install DX8/8a to run N4,
Sierra's stern admonitions to the contrary notwithstanding.
