I have a PIII 500 and a voodoo 5 5500 graphic card. I seem to get better
results usind D3D when I thought it would be other way around, is this
normal. What are the best drivers for this card and GPL.
Thanks

Use the 3DFX Glide settings.  I find they look nicer then D3D.

I get better performance with D3D as well, PIII 600, Voodoo5. have always
wondered why.

Use neither of them. For optimal performance with 3dfx products use
glide.

Just a guess, but do you run in a very high res, like 1600*1200?  I read
somewhere that because Glide is so old, it's not optimized for high
resolutions.

Sounds like hear-say to me.  1600x1200 looks great on my card (V5).

How do you use glide only ?

I have a Voodoo 5500 with a Plll 550 and I have not been happy with the
performance I have tried various fixes etc but I still find the best I get
is from d3d but the colours are washed out and the scenery looks sort of
false were as with 3dfx the colours etc are great but the frame rate
regularly falls below 30fps I run 1024 without AA but d3d I run 800 with x2
AA without much fall below 36fps.
that's just my experience I keep thinking every time I upgrade it going to
get better but something else seems to crop up to lower the performance I've
stopped being an upgrade freak now though.

Regards

Bob

Same experience here (v5 pci fwiw). Glide's slower than on the V3 I have.
D3D is about the same speed as the V3, but I get x2fsaa for free at
1024x768 or 1280xwhatever.

I've never got to the bottom of why this is happening, tried several sets
of drivers. It's annoying rather than a problem... keep thinking I must be
missing something obvious. Maybe the obvious thing is that glide on a V5
is slower then D3D :-)

Kevin,
Check out some of the V5 optimization guides... I have a little more
processor power under the hood than you (1.2Ghz. T'bird) but I definately
get much better performance and graphics out of glide than D3D. I sit a a
solid 36fps. no matter if it's a full field and I'm at the back of the pack
(it happens more than I'd like to admit) or just running training laps.
Glide looks so much better than D3D that I wouldn't even consider running
D3D... so, I can't say if D3D has the same framerates as I have only tried
D3D a couple of times and immediately went back to glide. FWIW, I run the
x3dfx drivers over the last driver issued by 3dfx... you need the tools part
from the last 3dfx driver installed before you install the x3dfx update.
Good luck,
Robin

I think the lower framerates with Glide on the V5 are due to the way that
the mirrors are rendered. They are rendered differently with the Glide
renderer than with the D3D renderer. I don't know the technical issues, but
after testing for hours I think that the mirrors are the culprit.

Eh?  I never commented on how it looked.  I was trying to explain why D3D
may give better frame rates than Glide on a V5 in GPL.

Like I said, Glide is very old, it was last updated when people were running
games in 640*480 and 800*600, and it is not optimized for high resolutions.
In other words, it's designed to be fast at low resolutions.

The fact that you run in 1600*1200 seems to prove the point, but to be sure,
you could see if D3D was still faster than Glide in GPL at 640*480.

OK, however "may" is the operative the word here.  ;-)

Since I didn't design the Glide API, I can't speak to that.   It was
probably designed at a time when those two resolutions were the norm.

I don't run it at 1600x1200.   I did some tests this morning, interesting
results for sure.

One problem with testing is everyones system is different.  Here's my
specifications.

Intel P3-733
Genuine Intel motherboard.
Windows ME, 512MB RAM.
VooDoo5 AGP.
DirectX 8.0.  3DFX drivers 4.12.01.

The other problem is where/how to test.  I chose Watkins Glen, every detail
option enabled, detail slider in the middle.
Skipped the practice and recorded three values, all while sitting at the
back of the 19 car pack.  I held the brake and didn't move the whole time.

Note - FSAA was off in all tests.

Value 1 = Everyone sitting idle, waiting for the flag to drop.
Value 2 = Pack is starting to move, frame rate drops but stabilizes then
increases.  Value is aproximate stabilize value.
Value 3 = All cars are off screen.

Here's my results.

What do you mean by the x3dfx drivers update and where do i get hold of
them.
Thanks

Kevin,
Well if you go to 3D Spotlight's tweak guide for the V5 5500 (
http://www.3dspotlight.com/tweaks/voodoo5/index.shtml )  you'll see a link
to what is basically a dead site... I think they refer to it as "under
deconstruction" but the downloads still work and that's where you get the
x3dfx drivers. You have to follow the instructions at 3D Spotlight's tweak
guide for the installation of these drivers as they point out a problem with
a file ( I think it's 3dfxvs.dll/3dfxvs.vxd depending on which OS you are
running ) that x3dfx doesn't own up to. I think the link to dl the x3dfx
beta drivers is http://212.250.187.36/drivers4.html but definately go to the
tweak guide and read because there is a lot of good info there. I have been
running the recommended setup fromt this guide for about 3 or 4 months now
and I have had 0 (that's zero) compatibility problems with this driver
setup. My system is completely stable and it performs above what I had heard
you can expect from the V5 5500. Your mileage may vary... of course.
Good luck,
Robin
P.S. There is a printable version link on the last page of the tweak guide
at 3D Spotlight and if you have the ink and paper to spare I would recommend
printing it... kinda' a bible for me when it comes to setting up my V5 and
it saves going back online to check something after I get creative and try
and "improve" things... I've always ended up going back to these settings.
