GPL - I tried the open GL patch last night

by -Pau » Fri, 06 Nov 1998 04:00:00

I have a P2-400 with two V2's and a Viper 550 TNT.  I'm happy with the glide
support (ecstatic actually), but I wanted to try the opengl patch.  I copied
it to the dll and INI file to \sierra\gpl.  Open GL was a graphics option.
I selected it, hit the green button and exited the game.  When I came back
in, the color was slightly different so I am thinking that the Riva is
running things.  I select Single Race at Monaco and when I finally get on
the track i have a black screen.  I can hear the cars running.

I have read of other people having success, so I am hoping it is just a
minor problem.  Any ideas????

Try running at 640x480 as that should work with most any TNT driver.
You might want to verify that you have the latest Diamond driver and
perhaps try the latest NVidia reference drivers as well.

I downloaded the latest reference drivers the other day from
http://www.3dfxmania.com but I will try a different screen resolution.

Thanks,

FYI the last time I checked the reference drivers only seemed to work
at 640x480.

I have the same setup and experienced the same blackout problems with the
Viper.  Here's what I did that seems to help, although until they get the
mirror problem fixed you'll probably want to use your V2s.

Go into the sim and change the 3dcard to opengl and the screen res to
640x480.  Exit the sim and then go back into it.  Go to a track and enter
the options menu from the track.  Change your screen resolution to whatever
you want that your monitor supports.  Using this technique I was able to try
out resolutions up to 1280x1024 with almost 100% success avoiding the black
screen you describe.  I was never able to start the sim from any resolution
other than 640x480 without problems.(that is, open GPL from desktop with the
in-sim resolution already set to something other than 640x480)  This may not
be completely effective, but maybe you can at least see what GPL looks like
on your V550.
