GPL Wish List & warm up lap query

by Tim Leighto » Mon, 08 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I find GPL exceptional, but I wonder if in 1967 the drivers had one (or
more) warm up laps before the start as they do today. If so, is this
modelled in GPL? I find cold tires at the start very difficult sometimes
especially if I am on the front row and I know Clark and Hill etc will make
scorching starts. I have a tendency to spin or swerve right off the line or
to outbrake myself at the first bend.

Secondly I wish in the replays I could have a little window showing the
pedals, so I could learn from others' brake and accelerator movements. it
might not be practical, but I could learn a lot, especially about trail
braking.

IIRC back in those days they rolled the cars from the pits to a "false-grid"
(similar to the one they do presently but behind the S/F line).  When they
cranked the machines, they all go place themselves a hundred of feet in
front where their position should normally be, and this is when the Green
flag dropped.

This would had been a nice addition but the input for the gas and brake is
not modeled on screen (the***pit has a flat shape below the driver's
"body").  So you would need to change the car polygon models, create a set
of polygon shaped legs, etc...  It's possible, just one of those things you
won't find (99.999% sure) in a patch.  The best thing is to go with the
driver's head movement and the audio cues for acceleration/braking ;)

At the start, the AI car instruments show the perfect oil and water
temp (tires too, probably), so I guess GPl models the effects of a
warm-up lap for the AI drivers, but not the player(s).

maybe dont ask for the seeing of the pedals (adds polygons and design) but
ask for something like a bar at the bottom of the screen that shows how much
of gas and brake is on.

I bet what they do is they don't model the AI cars dynamically changing
throughout the race, they just stay the same (same tire temps, same engine
temps, same state of mind (no brain fade).  So later on in sims this needs
to be modeled.

Actually at the nurburg, they had a short chute where they would go through
about 3 turns and it brought them right back to the pits (you know how you
go right behind the pit lane? right at the end there) so they didnt have to
wait but could still warm everything up, they might have run that a couple
of times around to get the tires warm but I bet they just used it to get the
*** cleaned and move the tires from cold to cool.
