WinXP Upgrade = GPLStatic and NR2002 Hiss

WinXP Upgrade = GPLStatic and NR2002 Hiss

No hardware changes whatsoever.  Upgraded from Win98SE to XP Pro.
Relatively uneventful except that the OEM SB Audigy card gave me a bunch of
problems.  Card remained uninstalled after upgrade, so I reinstalled from
original CD.  The install went ahead "automatically" but then resulted in
lots of audio problems.  I then realised that the CD had no XP drivers on
it...the 2000 drivers were being used.

Also had the annoying volume resetting to full after every re-boot, which I
had initially in 98SE.  Cured it back then by installing the latest drivers
from Creative (when the eventually came out).  Downloaded the latest drivers
for XP and tried installing...total mayhem.

Fiddled around for a few hours and then just thought it isn't worth it.  I
got a burn of a current Audigy OEM installation CD from my vendor.
Installed it and everything was perfects and back to stable--except for a
slight case of static "sparkles" in GPL and pronounced hiss in NR2002 where
there used to be no static and a nice wind noise.

Upgraded drivers to the latest from the Creative site (which worked
perfectly this time), but no effect on the static and hiss.  No other game
so far has an audio problem.

Tried several video drivers--no effect.  Tried backing down hardware
acceleration--actually makes the problem worse.  Tried using lower quality
sampling--no effect.

The only difference, besides the obvious drivers, is that the IRQ's are now
being assigned by ACPI (higher numbers) instead of the old fashioned way.
According to the BIOS and the old Win98, I have no shared IRQ's.  There are
no overlapping numbers under XP, of course.

Any ideas?

Marc

You've already covered most of the bases...other than trying to
physically move the sound card to another slot...preferably far away from
the vid card...I don't have any other ideas.
Good Luck..let us know if you find a cure.

You might want to have a look at the newsgroup Products.Sound_Blaster.Audigy
on news.creative.com

There were quite a few threads about acoustic disturbances under WinXP,
sometimes referred to as 'snap, crackle and pop'. There were also many
suggestions for solutions posted over the time, which usually didn't work
for all, but for some. Seems to be a little different on each machine.

Thanks...I already exhausted that group before coming here.  As far as I can
tell, the only 2 apps I have a problem with are my dearest Papy sims.
Everything else works perfectly.  That's why I thought someone here might
have run into the same scenario.

I did that the first time around...and it worked well under Win98.  No
shared IRQ's as I said.  Are you saying the ACPI assignment of IRQ's could
now be causing a problem between the video and sound?  (And by the way, the
sparkly static in GPL seems like a video-related sound problem...but the
hiss in NR2002 does not!?!?!?!).

Don't know if this will help or not...I had a similar problem in
win2k...somebody told me to turn the volumn down in windows and use the volumn
control on the speakers...it didn't cmpletely solve the problem but it did make
a noticable improvement....good luck.....

I didn't see it but do you have a Nvidia video card?  Both Nvidia and
Creative drivers go out and try and grab as much of the PCI bus as they can.
I wouldn't be surprised if this a big cause of the downgrade of pnline play
with a modem now that most new modems are PCI based instead of ISA. I  had a
major problems racing online with a new system in N4 when I didn't with my
old system one. I was getting the 10035 error which is "Network device not
availible" alot. After switching to an external modem to get the modem off
the PCI bus. (old system was an ISA modem) all was well again.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass but the best cure for your problem is a
Turtle Beach card. Creative products are not what the use to be, and it
really shows in Papy games. Back when N4 was out I dumped my SB Live card
and went to a Philips AE and gained 15fps!  Now that I write this I wonder
how a PCI based modem would work now.

Yes, I do have an nVIDIA card...  Would adjusting the PCI latency help in
this situation?

Creative issues with snap, crackle, pop have been plaguing people for years.
Especially since Win2K came out.  Their cards just don't play nice on the
PCI bus, or so I'm told.

I left all that behind about 2 years ago when I switched to Turtle Beach
Santa Cruz cards.  No slot dependance, no buss saturation, no problems at
all.

100% agreement on the TBSC card.  One of the most trouble-free pieces of
computer equipment I've ever owned.

Wouldn't hurt to try, but I really have no idea if it would work or not.

Is there a model or any card in particular I should look at?  Unfortunately,
I haven't seen them available ANYWHERE here (Toronto).

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz is the only way to go IMO. They are about $80 USD at
CompUSA. Then all you'll need is a god set of 5.1 speakers if you don't all
ready have some.

Is that a Canadian store? He did say he was in Toronto, and I'd doubt the
have a CompUSA there (USA being the key part)
