I thought you had to cross the start-finish line to take the yellow.
What a bogus finish. Castro-Neves didn't have enough fuel to finish.

In Nascar you race back to the yellow line, but at Indy you hold posistion
as soon as the yellow is shown.  In the old days...you even had to maintain
the same gap...so if you were 5 car lengths behind the leader, you had to
stay 5 car lengths back until the green was thrown.

That's what I thought, too.  I didn't realize they'd changed the rules...  I
actually didn't realize Tracy had gotten by until they started arguing about
it.  I thought Helio stayed in the lead as they crossed the s/f line.

Well, I *wanted* Helio to win, so I'm not too broken up about it...<g>

IIRC this was only done for one year, using a complicated system of
flashing red and green lights-if it turned red you were illegally gaining on
the guy ahead and had to hold your position.  Naturally the drivers hated
it and they got rid of it the next year.
I almost always race w/o yellows in NR because I hate to see a huge
lead evaporate just because some back marker plowed into the wall (c.f.
Dale Sr. at Daytona 1990 when he almost lapped the entire field at one
point).  But in real life you have to make compromises for safety's sake...

So you don't find it fishy that just as a CART driver moves to the lead an
IRL backmarker has a problem??   TG has rigged races ever since he was in
control of the track...remember when TWO former winners couldn't even
qualify??   Helio's goose was cooked, he wouldn't have even finished on the
podium.

I did an ICR2 race the day before at Indy and had to slam on the brakes
whenever a yellow came out for fear of passing and getting a black flag
or worse yet crashing out.  No racing to the flag, even in the sim.
And...I was running too high boost most of the race [starting from the
back] so had to turn it down and lift off around the track to make it
to the end with 1 lap of fuel to spare and 2nd place gaining +4.5...
+3.5... +1.5....weird to watch the race today and see it all happen in
real life!  Just wished there was no yellow so we could have seen a
duel to the line- would have been one of the great finishes ever.

Positions revert to the positions in effect at the time the yellow goes off.
I don't think the IRL races to the yellow, at least not at Indy.
