I'm sorry, you have to be kidding...TWO (millionaires living thier
dream of being top level professional racers) drivers are going risk
their lives, limbs, families, to wreck their cars at over 200 MPH in
order to "fix" a race for someone else??  Exactly WHO is going to do
that? What team is going to throw those cars away?  What person is
going to risk suicide? I'm not saying that it is certainly not
possible to fix a race, but come on...wrecking your car?

I don't think TG rigged the race, but I do think Paul Tracy won.  They
were side by side when the yellow came out and it could've gone either
way but if I were the official I would've given the win to Paul.

I'm a diehard Penske fan (my hometown is their HQ) and I think
Castroneves is a class act all the way but the ruling on the appeal is
BS imho.

This is just one more reason to dislike the IRL.  Winners decided by
officials, sheesh.

The yellow light came on in the drivers***pit as well as on the track in
front of the two leaders.  Helio lifted and Paul passed.  Laurent Redon
spent the evening in the hospital after his crash with Buddy Lazier on the
next to the last lap - I'm pretty sure he wouldn't risk his life for a
fellow IRL driver to finish better than a CART driver...

It was an unfortunate finish to a great race, but IMHO based on the IRL
rulebook, Castroneves is the clear winner.  He said at the awards banquet
last night that he didn't have the fastest car - his crew's decision to stay
out on the previous caution was a great call that got him to the front.

nawwww I'm just getting warmed up.  When you have the man who pays some
of the driver's salaries, the man who helps finance some of the teams, the
man who owns the ONE track your limited sponsors want to be at.....and a
suggestion comes down to cause a yellow quick....do you argue??  Aren't you
at all suprised that Laurent and Buddy were even near each other??  After
500 miles were they in a fight for position?  Nope I just checked and Buddy
was 2 laps down and Laurent was ANOTHER two laps laps behind him.
Here's an interesting quote from an IRL regular.  First remember that
Little Al was the buffer/speedbrake between Castro-Neves and Giafone/Tracey
for several laps right at the end of the race...Jr himself was a lap down
and in no position to go for a win.

(this quote taken from the Speedchannel website)

"Everybody said that our engine was going to have problems, but the Nissan
engine ran impeccably," Cheever said. "I kept getting stuck in traffic. I
dont know what it is with Al Unser Jr., but every time I get behind him and
he is a lap down, he holds me up and I lose a few places. I lost a strong
third place because of that."

(Unser's 2 million dollar salary is NOT paid by his race team but by the
League's owner<Whose name I dare not speaketh>)  Unser's title is Driver
Instructor...you'd think the league's Driver Instructor would know enough to
get out of the way of two of the frontrunners who are tying to catch a
slowing leader.

Hi Dave, I just wanted to add that I was at the race and using a
scanner to monitor race traffic.  My scanner was set to jump to the
driver's frequency when the channel became active.  Guess what???
When Paul Tracy went to make his pass I did not hear TG broadcast the
instruction to crash... or are secret radio frequencies and mental
telepathy part of the *** also?  If you want to argue that the
official's call was biased due to TG's influence, that is one thing...
but saying that there was an instruction either during or before the
race that if a CART driver is about to pass for the win, crash your
car!!?? ...wait a second... must keep typing... having difficulty...
strong urge overcoming me to crash my computer.....  is that a wall

that happens to me alllll the time.   Of course my crash on command
theory is just that.  However, the car owner of Paul Tracey's car has some
interesting ammo to back up his claim.   ESPN put the frame by frame footage
together to show that PT completed the pass BEFORE the yellow was actually
thrown.(everyone admits the accident took place before the pass, but the
question is when the yellow was actually displayed)  AND using the official
IRL timing and scoring, he showed Paul had completed the pass...Further,
several drivers including team-mate Dario Franchitti and IRL defending
Champion Sam Hornish Jr testified that they could see the two cars and PT
had completed the pass before the yellow light went off on their dashes....
(this info on the ESPN RPM site)
  One has to wonder........:)

Hi Dave,
I don't know about the intentional wreck but I will tell you my two cents...
When this all happened I looked at my brother and said "If the positions
were reversed and the "CART" team would have been leading while obviously
running out of fuel and the IRL team was attempting the pass and a yellow
came out the "official" decision from on high would have been the opposite
of this one". If you followed that rather long sentence good for you 'cause
my brother looked at me kinda' confused at first and then muttered "Tony
George sucks.". Yeah, we are both Canadian but I honestly thought he had
made the pass before the yellow was thrown... I was jumping up and down
yelling "Way to go, PAUL!" and then they score Helio ahead! My jaw literally
dropped.
Regards,
Robin

It was also weird how ABC switched cameras off of the leaders as the whole
thing happened. I think ABC's coverage of the 500 was awful in general.

If there's an accident, director will try to cut to that, often getting a
camera position which doens't show the incident (anymore)... that's pretty
normal.

During other passing manouvres there were some hard to explain cut aways...
I mean, do we need to see Scheckter drive the whole length of the
pitlane? -Show his stop "after" the on-track pass, I say. Plenty of time.
