GPL Freeze problem!

by John Courtn » Mon, 05 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Hi,
I posted about the same problem a couple of weeks ago.  The same
problem started happening to me when I reinstalled GPL.  I have a Diamond
Monster Voodoo II card and my problem came down to what glide drivers I
was using.  GPL doesn't seem to work well with the 2.54 glide drivers for
some reason.  I switched to a older glide dirver (2.53) and the problem
went away for me.  GPL seems to work ok (for me anyway) with the newer
glide drivers as well (2.56, found in the latest 3dfx reference drivers),
and I like the colours better than the 2.53 drivers.

GPL Freeze problem!

by Andre Warrin » Tue, 06 Jul 1999 04:00:00

For about a year now I've been playing GPL without any noticable
problems. But since a couple of days, GPL freezes very often. Often it
is while watching a replay. Suddenly the replay stops playing, the
mouse freezes and my keyboard freezes too. Strange thing is that the
sound of the replay does continue.
And now I was driving on Glen and suddenly the screen freezed. My
steering still worked, I could hear the engine and my shifting, but I
had to exit with ctrl-alt-del.
Anyone can offer me help here?

Thanks,
Andre

You wouldn't happen to own a Diamond Monster 3D II ??

I have 2 Diamond Monster II cards (SLI) and have allways used the 2.53
drivers. I'll try the 2.56 drivers, see if that helps....

I'll let you know.

Thanks,
Andre

Had the same problem with my Monster 2 turned out the board was
overheating. Installed a fan blowing over it and it's been fine since.

But is it logical then that the screen freezes allmost allways in the
replay mode, and not in the game itself? That happened to me only
once.
And how did you install a fan for the monster card?
Was it one of those fans that you can stick on the chipset of the
card, or a normal fan aimed at the cards?
Is there a way to measure the temperature of the cards?

Like Don says, probably an overheating problem (the weather has been getting
hotter over the past month). You can also try reducing the graphics clock on
the board if your drivers allow it.

Or switch to boards from Creative Labs... I did in the end and have been
trouble free since (touch wood).

GPL Freeze problem!

Hello Andre,

I too have the Diamond MonsterII 12MB card and I too had lockups. I found that
the clockspeed (adjustable via the Monster VoodooII control panel) was the
cause off this. Even setting it at 91MHZ (instead of the default 90) caused
lockups.  I operate the card at 90MHz now which solved the problem.

Another annoying thing which still does happen however: If I pause the game
(oops: simulator) it does lock up!  This is only the case when I pause it for
a longer time (If I have to get social again and drink a cup of coffee
downstairs). I suspect it has something to do with the OS (W98) though I did
disable the screensaver. Anybody out here got an idea on this problem?

I have same problem with my Creative voodoo2 12Mb, clockrate is now 88, but
it keeps freezing even with 2.53 drivers...also 2.56 drivers make screen
freeze..I can't race a single race without screen freeze. I ordered new
power to my PC, if temps would be better...<G>  I have temp problems with my
Brabham and this is not "game-engine-temp-thingy" THIS IS REAL TEMP
PROBLEMS! ;P

I used an old cpu cooling fan. Just used a***to go through the fan into
1 of the holes used to hold cards in, and positioned it to blow over the
board.

I have 5 fans in my case. Two are specifically for cooling the SCSI
harddrive (7200 rpm),which could be used as a hot plate otherwise. One blows
into the front of the case, another out the top (this one required cutting
the sheet metal), and of course the CPU fan. Oops, I forgot the fan for the
power supply, making a total of six fans. It's a good thing I have a 300
watt power supply. The only time I used to get lock-ups was when I used the
demo of the Monza track.

GPL Freeze problem!

Now I'm sure that it was a heating problem. Yesterday I turned on my
computer and only heard a long beeping noise. My.... ehhh... what's
the english word... the part that supplies the power, broke down.
Today my computer is going to be repaired.
I couldn't drive GPL yesterday, it was terrible. One day without GPL!
Totally frustrated I watched some videotapes of racing in the 60's
yesterday, read some books of Carroll Smith, and went to bed at 11.30
pm. Can't remember the last time I went to bed that early...

The word for the thing that supplies the power is -
"power supply". Almost too easy, isn't it? :)

Use the opportunity and get some sleep so you're in good shape when
the racing begins again. :)
