GPL + V3 3000 freeze problem

by Andre Warring » Sun, 30 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Today I bought a V3 3000 AGP card, because GP3 didn't run on my V2 SLI
cards. GP3 runs perfect now.
BUT: When I start gpl, I get the starting screen with the gpl logo,
and then the system freezes. I have to manually reset my pc after the
freeze.

I have installed Dx70a, the latest 3dfx drivers (1.05.00), ofcourse
the GPL 1.2 patch, and I have disabled triple buffering.
I also reinstalled all of the above again tonight just to make sure.

Any help please?

Do you have anything in PCI slot 1? I used to have a modem in there
which
caused freezes like you are getting.

No, PCI slot 1 is free. Someone at VROC told me to look at irq
conflicts, and indeed, both my SBLive card and my V3 card shared IRQ
10. I moved the SBLive card from PCI slot 4 to slot 2 and now V3 has
IRQ 10 all for itself. I was hoping this would solve the problem, but
unfortunately GPL still hangs after the intro screen...

You may wish to consider grabbing the D3D rasterizer from the Papyrus
site and running your V3 with it instead of the Glide rasterizer.
From what I've heard so far it's equivalent in performance and may
have some benefits, to boot.

Worth a shot, anyway.

Thanks Brett, I'll try that, let you know the results.

Brett, I tried it. After I installed the D3D patch, I started GPL.
After 10 seconds still no menu screen, and I thought GPL had crashed
again. In frustration I pressed ctrl-alt-delete a couple of times, and
to my surprise I saw the menu screen.

Seemd weird, but after a couple of restarts it turns out that GPL
takes about 30 seconds now to show the menu screen, instead of the +/-
10 seconds it took with my V2 card.
I started racing in training mode, looking good, 36 fps, allthough I
liked the graphics in 3dfx better. The D3D graphics look a little bit
jagged.

Anyway, tried a race against AI, and the fps was not good.
24 fps at the start (had 26-27 with my V2 SLI) but after the start fps
was between 30-33, while with my SLI the fps jumped to 36fps right
after the start. Only when the other cars were away from me I had
36fps again.

So clearly it's a Glide problem.
I switched back to Glide an restarted GPL. After a minute, the menu
screen appeared. I went to Graphics, but instead of 3dfx, None mode
was selected. GPL can't start in Glide for some reason.
BTW, maybe this is interesting, in the Graphics menu, I see this:

3DFX
3DFX
NONE
D3D
Rendition

So I have 3DFX 2 times in my list.

If anyone has some suggestions, please help...

Your problem is that you did not fully remove all traces of Glide from your
system (from your old V2 setup).  Depending on board manufacturer, many of
their Utilities had a "Glide Sweep" option which would remove all old
traces.

I'd suggest removing all traces of the V2 and Glide from your system, esp.
the registry, then do a clean install of the V3.

I manually removed all the old drivers and entries from the registry.
Then I reinstalled the V3 drivers and DX7 again.
Now GPL works again (!) but still in a strange way.
I start GPL, get the intro screen, then it seems to hang.
I have to press ctrl-alt-delete a couple of times, and after a minute
or so the menu screen appears. Then GPL works perfect (quite a fps
improvement, and the picture looks just better compared to the V2).
Tomorrow I'll do I clean install of Windows (yikes), clearly GPL is
still having problems with older V2 drivers.

Thanks for the help all,
Andre

Which files are those? Only the glide2x.dll file? I deleted that
one...

If you are not certain you got all the registry entries for the v2,
there is is a utility at the 3dfx gamers site named delv.inf.  I think
it is in the banshee faq.  If the screen is going blank, it could also
be a monitor refresh rate prob.

Thanks, I'll check it out, perhaps it saves me a fresh windows

Unfortunately it doesn't work.
It's reinstall Windows time... :)
