You have a *3D* card, NOT a *3dfx* card. 3dfx is a chipset, used on Voodoo
1, Voodoo 2, and Banshee video cards, and to use the 3dfx mode in GPL (and
many other games) you have to have one of these cards. GPL also works with
Rendition cards.
To run GPL well on your system, you'll need a Voodoo 2 card, such as a
Diamond Monster II, STB Blackmagic, Creative 3D Blaster, Canoups Pure 3D II,
etc. The beauty is it'll plug in and work alongside your current video
card. Shopping around, you should find one with 12 Megs of memory for ~$150
w/rebates, or even less. ~$100 for an 8 meg version, but I'd go for the 12
if you could afford it.
Oh yeah, there is a 3dfx patch for N2, and the Nascar Racing 99 updated
version will have even better 3dfx support. It'll look nicer and run faster
with the 3dfx, so it'll be a good investment. Of course if you don't run a
lot of games besides these, you might consider a Hercules Thriller 3D
Rendition card, which would replace your Riva 128. N2 and GPL support this
also, but it doesn't have as wide support as the 3dfx cards - the same as
your Riva, it'll run all Direct 3D games but not those specifically for
3dfx. Also ~$100-150.
