DirectX 7.0a is huge improvement in Force Feedback

First, if you have a malconfigured system (which includes non-name brand
sound and video cards that have balked with previous versions of DX, read
this and weep because you won't want to try it for fear of screwing up your
system).

For the rest of us who use Force Feedback controllers, go get it now!!!!!!!
The Force feedback aspects of DX have been completely transformed.  The
feedback cycle (or delay) is fantastically improved (N3 and NL are now as
smooth as silk on my system, I have reduced my GPL latency down to 0, etc.).
The actual effects seem to be altered for the better in some ways too.  In
games like RC2000, I did not notice a change to the effects, but an
improvement in frame rates was in order.

So basically it is a no-brainer--it will improve whatever you are using and
playing.

And the best bonus...it did not affect my customised dead zone settings (all
0) that I had set-up previously.

Thanks for the unexpected Christmas present, Microsoft.

Marc.

Yes, but did they fix all the problems with USB devices?  Even their _own_
USB Devices?

Thanks :)

Is it faster compared to DX6 or compared to DX7? Because, with DX6
everything was fine with my FF system, framerates with FF were about
the same like without FF. With DX7, GPL was ok, but Ratbags Dirt Track
Racing (Demo) was unplayable with FF enabled...luckily this is fixed
now. Thx Microsoft ;)

Do I have to update from the Logitech FF 3.25 drivers to use DX7a? I don't
want to use the 3.30 drivers, because I can't uninstall the Profiler, and
still run the wheel. I can't drive GPL with the Profiler installed.

Anyone know if 3.25 works with DX7a?

DirectX 7.0a is huge improvement in Force Feedback

Don't know about Microsoft's own USB devices but I have a new Logitech
Extreme 3D joystick for flight games (hey - everyone need a short break from
GPL now and then) that comes with Gameport and USP adaptors. Under DX7 I had
to plug it into the Gameport because of severe USB weidnesses (showed up in
the Game Controllers Control Panel but responded very erratically). Now,
with DX7a I plug it into my USB port with no problems (have tested it with
two different games so far). So I would say that yes, DX7a does fix the USB
problems of DX7 and, if you have name brand sound and video cards with
current drivers, I would consider upgrading a no-brainer.

(BTW: I am another one of those lucky guys who has never had a problem with
DX upgrades and think it's because I stick with name-brand components - SB
Live sound and Voodoo 3 video - and keep the drivers current.)

(BTW again: even under DX7 my Logitech Wingman Formula Force wheel worked
just fine plugged into the USB port - talk about USB weirdness...)

Hope this helps,

Daniel

Could you tell me what you mean by "I can't drive GPL with the Profiler
installed"? GPL seems different somehow, but I am a casual player, and I
just reinstalled everything from scratch, including DX7 and 3.30 of the
profiller. I haven't had time to play much lately to figure out what is
making it feel different.

The Profiler adds a dead zone to GPL that isn't there when I don't have it
installed. With Direct Input and no Profiler, it looks to me as if there is
no dead zone in GPL. There is a noticeable one with the Profiler running.

I've tried using the Deadzone utility, as well as the Logitech tool, and
that CTJ?? joystick utility, with no effect on the Profiler. It is too bad,
because I like the programmable buttons in the Profiler. It is also just
another layer of controls that intermix with the GPL Linearity slider. I'm
never sure which is doing what. Sop I juts install 3.25, uninstall the
Profiler, and race.

But I doubt if 3.25 will work with Dx7a? I can't uninstall the 3.30 Profiler
for some reason that escapes me at the moment. I did try it.

Kevin, I'm using the 3.20 drivers with DX7a and everything is fine. In
fact, the pedal resolution seems to have gone up quite a bit, making
accelerating and braking much easier. Of course, I can't be absolutely
sure this is an effect of Dx7a, but it looks safe enough to try.

FYI I'm running the LWFF over the USB port, and don't use the Profiler
for the same reasons you don't.
BTW, with 7a I still have to open the controller applet for the wheel to
be recognised.

Where does one go to change these dead-zone settings?  I gather
that the defaults are non-zero?  Are they only present for FFB
controllers, or would they affect my TSW?

Thanks,

-Chris-
