N3 & DirectX 7.0a

by Doug Bishop Jackson Mi » Tue, 01 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I just downloaded DirectX 7.0a from the MS web site.  Before
installing it I would like to know if I SHOULD.  I am running DX6.1
right now.  Will I benefit from this version?  Here's my system:

PII 333
128MB RAM
ATI All in wonder pro (agp w/8mb)
Win98 (NOT SE)

OLD joystick (could use suggestions on wheel also)

Any help???

Thanks

Dx7a worked great for me with Win98, P450, 128Mb and V3 2000. It seemed to
make controls and games 'smoother' but I couldn't say it improved FPS. And
for a wheel, the MSFF takes some beating, it sits at a good angle on the
desk, the pedals are good, is built very well. The majority of things that
people don't like about it are that it can seem to use up FPS, and that
people don't read the instructions and know how to programme it.

As long as it is 7.0a, and not the original 7.0, you should be ok.

7.0 was horrible software.  It broke many, if not most, USB
controllers and caused all sorts of hate and discontent.

Amen to that. DX 7.0 gave me (and still is) many grey hairs. DX 7.0a
seems to have solved most of the problems, but in some cases you will
need to also remove and re-install your sound, video and controller
drivers after updating to 7.0a - to clean up the mess left by 7.0.

Zenon
