Here's a neat little tidbit of info I got off of Bootnet:

"Microsoft's new Direct X, version 3.0, will not support force feedback
joysticks or VR products despite the fact that third-party developers of
such products, such as Immersion and CH Products, were promised support by
Microsoft at the Computer Game Developers Conference just last spring.

An anonymous source told boot that Microsoft's Direct Input group made
promises to the companies with no intention of keeping them.

Microsoft recently acquired EXOS, a force-feedback joystick and technology
developer. Since Microsoft's force-feedback products are not ready for
market yet, the move to drop support for such devices from Direct X 3.0
could be viewed as a positioning tactic by Microsoft to control the
introduction of force feedback technology with Direct Input drivers."

Another example of MS trying to control the industry.

This is why everyone should toss Win95 out the window (no pun
intended).

This will backfire on Microsoft, if true. Just one more reason to continue
producing DOS titles instead of Win'95 titles. I'll have to check in with
my source in the DirectInput group at MS and see if this is true.

Why don't you just go ahead and throw the rest of your computer out the
window with it.  Like it or not, Windows is the future of ***.

If they keep doing ***like this I doubt it. Also, you might want to
tell the game companies this so they stop writing DOS based games.
Don't hold your breath.

Some companies already have already stopped, while many others support both
OS's.  Sierra has for the most part (although Nascar2 will be DOS but will
require Win95 for the NRL front-end) and Epic MegaGames is now totally
Win95.  *** Interactive, Electronic Arts, LucasArts, Interactive Magic,
and Activision are all writing for both with some new releases to be Win95
only.  Obviously DOS will not die quickly as it has a huge marketshare, and
it would not be in a company's best interest to drop support for it cold
turkey.  Frankly I'm surprised that Epic made such a move, but DOS's days
are numbered.
