F1 2000: reduced to 4 AI cars still unbearable

by * Leon » Sun, 02 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Hi

I have tried my level best to reduce all the graphics etc
so that I could atleast do a race ( single player )
even to the extend of only 4 cars visible.

But I still can't even get to start at the race,
I could hear engines roaring and still the lights
go off, but I am paused and simply could not
get off.........
until more than half of the field already left

How are you guys able to race ??

my spec 450mhz, 64mb , TNT
full install

thanks

Not sure what's totally wrong, I put the Myth version at 800x600 with
about half the detail and it ran fairly well.  Maxed out with full
detail was not even a slide show tho...

I'm not sure why you aren't getting a better
frame rate.  I just finished a 100% GP with
a full field at 1024x768.  Except for the
start, the frame rate was +30 all the way.

I have:

Celeron 450, 64 MB, Voodoo3

I have all special effects turned off.  Mirrors
are off, as are grandstands (huge fps hit), and
miscellaneous.  My viewing distance is set to
high, with the 'level of detail distance' set
to medium.  Everything else is set to low.

I tried to run the game with only 64mb and it was slideshow on my P3

was way ahead of me. I put back in my other 64mb dimm and BAMM! All
fixed. The difference between 64 and 128mb was like night and day.

Check out the F12k froum over at High Gear, ppl have found the same
difference.

btw, turning of the mirrors makes a huge difference too.

Hi

Well,  That's partly good news to hear that some settings
the  game is playable.

I will try to trouble shoot again.
That could have been the graphic card driver ??
( CL 2.08 nor 3.68 = both gave similar results )

sounds like 64mb to 128mb does help
but I am not inclined to think THAT is the
problem.

I found the number one PROBLEM for framerate
is the CAR DETAILS both for player & AI.
They must be at low.

64-128mb DOES help.

Thats because you don't have enough RAM.

Hey Leong,

Going to 128MB helps big time!!! Besides it's cheap (ard S$90
for first party at SLS) and stuff like Photoshop would
appreciate the extra memory... Turn off the mirrors, turn off
the placement map and 8 cars visible... it should fly...

BTW, I hope you're using the retail version. The SMS `OEM'
version sucks in FPS...

If you're keen on a race (I'm in Singapore), lemme know.

With all cars I get about 15-17 at start and goes to 22-24 for the
race. This is at Albert Park. My PC is Pent 400 with 32MB TNT2 and
128MB ram.

Texture detail to medium
No mirrors at start. You can flick on mirrors if needed.
plus joystick flick I can look behind with one of the buttons.

I think that there has been a number of posts earlier giving ideas on
what to do as far as options go. Do a search and look for these.

hi stanley
nice to hear from you

S$90 for 128mb ???
Are you kidding me.....I did go to buy and was
surprised to see prices like $189 for 128mb

anyway, does it matter which brand ?

btw, what setting do you have for the texture ?

Whoops, I meant to say S$90 for 64MB lah.... juz bought u see. I

and I'm running most textures at at 800x600 med, except draw
distance and texture detail which are high. Only Trees, Misc and
Pit objects are off and the rest are on. 8 cars visible, but
full field. Placement map and mirrors OFF (Very important!!!!)

I've not measured frame rates, but they're very smooth. though
somewhat slow (liveable) during starts. FPS is certainly
improved in the retail...

i. U'll prob see a decent enough improvement with 128MB, but
hey, an extra 64MB won't hurt ;)

ii. Assign the rear view to one of the buttons on the steering
wheels. Use when entering braking zones, takes a bit of getting
used to tho. Or you could leave the mirrors off during the start
and then turn them after the first few corners.

iii. I don't used mapping. I think it gives a cars more
reflective surfaces, but I'd rather use the extra FPS (if I had)
on keeping the mirrors on.

iv. Field size can be adjusted for test sesstion and quick race.
But for the championship, you need to edit the *.plr... I think
you can check out the thread on running F12k on low end systems.

v. I've no problems with the AI crashing into me. With the
`beta', yes there were big problems, but the retail's solved
alot of them. IMHO, they're very raceable...a few cars may
tangle, but it;s not destruction derby.

ok
you got me bitting now....

will check out this week's prices.for 128mb
( giving me 192mb ram )

But how do you race without mirrors ?
those stupid AI keep doing all sorts of overtaking
tactics that are more of destruction derby ...

what do you have for enviroment mapping ?
( what does that do - I could not distinguish it )

Full field is a default right ?
I could not find any options to reduce them.
Hope a patch will be out soon.

BTW, did you find a "certain wave like motion"
when viewing for the chase position.
It seemed like the car is a motor boat
a lot of side slipping....

...

The improved frame rate almost makes up for the lack of mirror views
:(

Environment mapping is used to get that metalic, shiny look.
It does cost an extra paint probably to get it, so compare frame rates
when turning it off. The***pit looks better WITH it though.

I have a P3 450mhz - 128 Mo of RAM and an ATi 16 mo and i can do all the
details graphics to max
but when i try "Texture mapping" to max, the game is loading and at the
first picture of the race, the screen is
locked and i have to reboot Win98. Do you have same problem ?

Am i alone or everybody remark that ?:
When we play, they aren't any informations in the screen like speed or time
lap in progress, etc...
IT'S A SHAME THAT EA RELEASE A F1 SIM WITH THIS BUG, don't you think ?
