Problems with GPL & GeForce2

by Steve Pritcha » Wed, 14 Mar 2001 16:52:00

Hi,

I've jsut put a machine together, and am having a few problems with graphics.  I
suspect I might need a better power supply as I've got an Athlon 1.2Ghz, and an
Asus V7700 running on a 300W power supply.

In GPL, using either the OpenGL or D3D rasterizer, as I drive out of the pit
stall, the graphics hang (in D3D) but the game continues, or I get an error in
the raterizer (in OpenGL).

Anybody got any ideas?

Cheers,

Steve.

Hi!

Seems like a heat problem to me. Try running GPL with one side of the
computer case opened (and maybe strip an additional fan on it that blows
over the cpu and the graphics card). If that cures your problem, you'll have
to think about some additional cooling for your system. You can also have
some heat-monitoring software run in the background and check the
mobo-/cpu-temperatures afterwards.
300 W should be enough for the system though, if you don't have too much
other hardware attached to it.

If you don't get an answer here, try this site, it was very helpfull
for me solving my GFII problems: http://www.geforcefaq.com

Good luck,

Thanks - I've already spent some time there!  ;-)

I'm wondering whether it might be a driver issue?  N4 (demo) seems to work fine,
as does QuakeIII.

Cheers,

Steve.

Currently the case is completely open.  I don't think it is heat related (at
least I hope not - I'm not sure there's much more I could do to cool it without
changing the fan on the card).  I can play QuakeIII successfully for some time
(at least an hour), and the time demos run without a problem.

I suppose it could be driver related - I'm running 10.8.0 drivers, is anybody
else having problems with them?

Cheers,

Steve.

I agree, it doesn't sound like a heat problem, or a hardware problem.  To
find out if it's driver related, try the 6.50 drivers from www.nvidia.com
since they definitely work ok with GPL in D3D mode.  For GPL on a GF2, D3D
is faster than OpenGL.

I don't know why people bother with beta drivers anyway, isn't the card fast
enough with the reliable official drivers?

Also, 6.xx drivers are just as compatible with DX8 as any of the newer beta
drivers.

Hi!

Ok, then it's not the heat. I also suggest using V6.50 drivers like Mr.
Simon Brown here does. I don't have a GeForce myself (but will have in a
couple O# days), but some chaps in my LAN-league have and they all run those
drivers and GPL without any problem.

Fair point, but I was suffering bad stability problems and I tried a variety of
drivers during that time...

Nope, changing the drivers to 6.50 didn't fix the problem.  :-(

I'm not sure what else to try.  It's really strange that The N4 Demo seems to
work fine, and I can Play QuakeIII no problem, but GPL (the game I actually want
to play) doesn't seem to want to work.

Steve.

Hard to say.. I also have the Asus 7700 card, and it works fantastic,
at the back of a start at monaco I have a constant 36fps without a
drop when the cars start to move in 1024 res.
I have used a couple of different drivers, the 6.50, 10.50, they all
worked fine for GPL, but I went back to the Asus 6.31 drivers, I
didn't notice any fps difference between all these different versions,
and you need the Asus drivers to fully support the 3D glasses (the
10.50 beta drivers do support them, but not half as good as the Asus
6.31 drivers).
So I don't think it's a driver problem.. Maybe your system is having
traces of other drivers in your regstry causing your problems.
If you had a 3dfx card before, the best thing you can do is to simpy
reinstall Windows and do a clean install of the Asus drivers.
You can remove all 3dfx entries from your registry manually, I did
that, but a fresh reinstall of windows is best to make sure your
system is clean again.
To remove traces of other Nvidia drivers, use this excellent tweak
guide to remove the nvidia references from your registry:
http://www.3dgpu.com/tweaking/index.cfm

Tip: Don't mess with those 10.x beta drivers, a lot of people seem to
have problems with these drivers, with many games not working anymore.
The official 6.50 drivers are fine, but for the Asus 7700 I can
recommend the Asus 6.31 drivers.

Also post your problem on the nvidia newsgroup, there are some people
there who know anything about these cards.

Let me know please how things work out.

Andre.

The installation is almost clean.  Originally there was an old ATI card in the
machine when it was built, and then the Asus card was added, and there have been
multiple graphics drivers installed since then.  I'll try and ensure that the
drivers are completely removed, and go for a re-install of the Asus 6.31
drivers, and see if that helps.

Cheers,

Steve.

If people want to use beta drivers then they get what's coming to them (in
general, not a comment on this particular case).  The last four or five
releases of official drivers from nVidia have been totally compatible and
problem free in my experience, and i've tried them with a broad range of
games, as well as with my own D3D programs.  If NVidia used to have a bad
reputation, then from 6.xx onwards they've really got their house in order.

I sold my V5 because of driver bugs, and I can remember plenty of faults
with Voodoo 3 drivers.  I also remember 3dfx had a beta driver program for
the V3 (I had the sense to avoid them, as I do with nVidia beta drivers).

I don't mean to be a pain in the ass on this subject Dave, but your comments
just don't square with my experiences with the GF2 and it's drivers.  I
don't have an axe to grind.  I had a choice of getting a V5 or GF2 and I
chose the V5, so I'm hardly an NVidia lover.  In fact i've owned just about
every 3dfx product ever released (VG, V2, V3 + V5), but my GF2 has proved as
compatible as any of those cards were.

Glad your system is running well.  I am probably suffering from the
"the end for your 3dfx is near" syndrome...It just seems there are SO many
Nvidia drivers..
my perspective is from the 'outside looking in' and it sure seems to be lots
of
problems that really are inter-related with other systems.  Tom Pabst has
written about
real stability problems with certain hardware types and Win98se.. and acpi
and
Aureal soundcards....
But here I am...with an Aureal oem, a V5, an AMD, Win98se WITH acpi
installed
(don't tell Tom...!)  and all of these things should be fighting each
other...but they aren't,
at least not yet  :)
So, for now, I'll follow the IIABDFI rule.
