Problems with GPL & GeForce2

by Slyde » Fri, 16 Mar 2001 00:36:11

Just got started with GPL [oh why didn't I find it sooner?!] & once I'm able
to drive somewhat consistently plan on getting involved in VROC racing
online.

Got GPL installed, including the v1.2 update & d3d patch on a 933MHz PIII,
256MB ram, 32MB Annihilator2 video w/Creative drivers, SBLive! w/MP3 + 5.1
sound & using a Guillemot Ferrari FFB wheel & pedals setup - but I've only
been able to get in 2-3 laps of practice, then get a VxD Blue Screen of
Death.  This only happens running GPL.  Plan on going to Detonator drivers -
have already gone thru the nighmare of clearing my system of old ATI
drivers - but have a feeling the problem may be caused by the SBLive! for
some reason.

Have spent quite a bit of time browsing the GPL related websites & seem to
recall reading about a reason for this happening in GPL, along with a
work-around or fix - but can't remember where.  Does anyone know the
solution for this problem, or perhaps be able to direct me to the GPL guru
who could help in solving it?

D/L'd Eagle Woman's X-files car setups hoping they might help me get "up to
speed" quicker & noted one for Elkhart Lake.  I raced open wheel Formula Vee
& Formula B [poor man's = to today's Skip Barber class] cars in the SCCA
during the late 60's - early 70's & ran at Elkhart Lake many times.  Where
can I D/L this track?  Perhaps I can "get in the groove" of GPL racing
quicker since I'm familiar with the course!

I know where you're coming from, there are *lots* of threads here with
people having problems with NVidia cards, particularly the MX and Ultra.
It's hard to answer that point without delving into wild speculation.

I don't see the driver issue as a problem though.  I've never felt the need
to use any drivers but the official ones from nvidia.

I re-installed GPL (after having to try my 3rd CD drive because the copy
protection barfs on the first two), and it just works fine now.  It must have
been a patch or something, because when I copied various parts of my old
installation over the new, the problem re-appeared.

But I've got everything I want working now (sounds/tracks/cars), and so I'm a
happy chap.  The GeForce2 GTS rocks!  I've not really pushed it as hard as I
could, but the frame rates are fantastic.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Good news :)
Damn, how could I forget the 'reinstall GPL' tip :)
