Sadly though there aren't many flight sims to discuss any more, and the
group's been very quiet for a long time.

Some of us still keep an eye on it though, just in case something arrives
which *is* worth discussing.

Yea.  Pretty much everything since Falcon 3 has sucked :)

I think DI's Tornado was released after Falcon 3.  And you do not want
to suggest to Andrew MacPherson that Tornado sucks...

I probably still have a set of Tornado diskettes around somewhere.  It
was good and I flew it a bit.  Never got heavily into it, probably
because of racing sims.

Actually, I did get deep into EF2000, which was post-F3.  That's the
last combat flight sim I really pursued.  I'd love to fly it even
now.  I wonder how well it would run on a current computer with
unaccelerated graphics?

I've tried to get into the various versions of Falcon 4 over the
years, but it just takes too much time - not only to learn the
systems, but to fly missions.  Not much instant gratification compared
to online racing  :)

It's ok, I've been taking the pills and attending an anger management
course. I can now tolerate the idea that some people (especially
non-Brits) might not have been 100% bowled over by DI's religious
experience in the form of software.

I have less tolerance for those who didn't feel the earth move when GPL
was released. :-)

Well, as someone who DID feel the earth move when GPL was released (anybody
remember "The Apex"?) , let me ask this: Of the old combat sims, which ones
are worth having?  Maybe I could find them on Ebay or something.  Thanks!

The forums at www.simhq.com are healthy and the flight-sim usenet group
is pretty much dead.

How long is a piece of string? :-) The trouble with older sims is they're
a heady***tail of nostalgia, unfulfilled expectations, and outdated
hardware. Usually they work better in memory than RAM. ;-)

You can have a lot of free entertainment via Underdogs though...

Some games will require dosbox and sacrificing chickens to get running,
but that's half the fun.

Oh, I forgot to mention one of my all time favourites, Hind. It has an
arcade mode which is a lot of fun, and is still probably the best attempt
at putting soldiers into a flight sim. You even get to transport them
around.

Sadly, as with so many sims (did I hear someone say GPL2?), there was
never a sequel to build on excellent foundations. It does work in WinXP,
but without sound (for me) or joystick control.

FalconAF isn't half bad with all the addons, skins and so on out
there. I'd suggest checking out www.frugalsworld.com to get you
started on what's available. I agree about the endless ingress /
egress times during campaign missions in F4:AF though, I guess it
simulates the "hours of boredom followed by moments of terror" aspect
of modern warfare quite well.

Well, that site is full of great information.

Unfortunately, it's also a spyware haven.  Be careful what you click on!
All those smiley's, cursors, screensavers, etc... are harbors for
spyware/adware.

That was a great one!  Second best DI sim after you-know-which-one.  I
remember I was a bit sceptical to the primitive Hind, compared to their
previous Apache sim.  But when I actually tried it, it turned out to be
much more fun :)  And as you say, the infantery-modelling was probably
the best put into any flight sim yet.

Yes, too bad there never was any follow-up.  Though I am making a new 3D
***pit for the Hind in EECH, and hopefully I'll be able to resurrect
some of the gameplay from Hind also :)
