Good Video Card for GPL??

by Bla Bl » Sat, 24 Nov 2001 00:43:28

Hi,
I'm looking for a good cheap 3d video card for GPL, does anyone have ideas?
How does the Voodoo's work with it? I don't even have money to buy one, but
I still want one.. that's how cheap I want it ;-) hehe

I guess that it depends somewhat on your system speed, but generally speaking
the Voodoos work fine with GPL, since GPL supports Glide.  I've use a Voodoo2
with it and have since upgraded to a voodoo5 (my current card).  I'd recommend
the Voodoo5.

Work with it! LOL.  If your only interest is GPL then a Voodoo is the way to
go.  My V3 runs it nicely on a celeron 950 (but without the new cars, 3d wheels
etc :( ). V3's are fairly cheap on ebay these days too.  A V5 would be a wee
bit better but probably not worth the extra cash, especially if your cpu is
slow (ie less than a P3 850?). I know a couple guys still running GPL on V2's.

Of course with the D3D patch you could run it in a TNT(2?) card but you'd get
better performance/$ with a Voodoo card using glide.

voodoo cards do work very well with gpl but 3dfx who makes them has gone out
of business. I have a voodoo 1, 2 ,and 5 cards. They all served me well, but
now voodoo cards are not a good choice to buy. There is no support in
Windows XP for voodoo cards. I got my v5 to work but only in d3d. You would
be better off to go to bestbuy on friday between the hours of 7 and noon and
TRY to get one of the visiontek geforce 3 ti200 cards. They are $99 after
rebate. I have a gf3 that I picked up at newegg. The current price is $229.
It will run circles around the voodoo 5. The gf3 ti200 is almost as fast.
The memory is just slower. Then get the d3d patch from www.papy.com I run
gpl at 1600x1200 at 36fps all the time. I do have a athlon xp processor
running at 1549mhz so you may not get that resolution if your cpu is slower.
Good Luck!

Not to mention better image quality. I'm a bit disappointed at the
poor level of graphics in D3D compared with Glide. My old V3 3000 ran
GPL very nicely, but it's not the best with other games tho. If you
only want GPL, then 3DFX is the best option...

I hear what you guys are saying but think about this. D3d looked bad with my
voodoo. D3d with my gf3 looks a lot better. I would say that the voodoo
working in glide is better but voodoo cards are not a good option now
because they are out business. If you have any desire at all to upgrade to
windows xp, then the voodoo card is a bad choice. Best buy is having a
special tomorrow from 7-12 it was in their flier today. The gf3 ti200 is
only $99 after a $50 mail in rebate. I am giving my voodoo 5 to my four year
old on his computer. He is running windows me and it will work great for
him. I always liked my voodoo cards. The v5 was the best one too. I will say
that I like the gf3 I have better. It runs way above its stock speed of
200/458. I am running mine at 230/540. I get 116.7 fps in quake 3 at
1600x1200 on high. Maybe if you could find a voodoo 3 or a voodoo 5 for
about $40 then it would not be bad. Any more than that would too much.

Nah, my experience with the V5 says that is perfroms like the V3 when
2xFSAA is enabled. Which is manadatory on race sims :)

But the D3D patch gives the possibility to use hi-res dashboards and
so on. It may be only on the V5 though.

V3's are going for $30+ on ebay, $30 on price watch,  V5's for around $80+ on
ebay, $89 at pricewatch.  Was thinking about picking up a v5 for awhile, then a
gf2 GTS, and then the gf3ti's,  but think I'll hang on to the V3 until I have a
good reason to run D3D (ie I get tired of GPL).....unless of course someone has
a V5 they want to dust off and sell to me for a good price ;)

Considering ONLY GPL for a moment, what's the general consensus on 2
VooDoo2 cards in SLI mode?

Just curious.

It should perform like the V3 AFAIK.

If you're prepared to live with the "basic" GPL Gfx and are prepared to
sacrifice some details on some tracks, I can't see a V2-SLi setup being
a "bad" setup for GPL, but I would expect it to have problems with all
the "high res" add on's that you can find these days

After all, this is what GPL was designed to run on, that and 8 MB
Rendition V2x00 cards, and I was rather pleased with that back then

Come to think about it, GPL was the reason I bought my Hercules 3D
Thriller V2200 card....now, I know I give nVidia a hard time about
crappy drivers, Hercules.....oh man, I even got an e-mail from their
tech support advising me to use Rendition's drivers instead, which of
course meant I couldn't use the TV out.....good card for GPL though,
guess most of the guys at Papy had something similar back then ...:-)

Beers and cheers

Nah, I had both SLI and then a V3 - V3 was quite faster than SLI.
Sli in itself was only marginally faster than one V2. I believe it
only gained me 2-3 fps in GPL.
