GPL-video card questions

PII-266, Intel 440BX motherboard with onboard Crystal PCI sound, 64
meg RAM.  Disappoining framerates in GPL with my Canopus Rendition
(1000) board, latest drivers.

I read that the Thriller is better if you have less than a PII.  I
read that AGP is only marginally better than PCI and that the Thriller
implementation of AGP is pretty rudimentary.

Assume I care only about Papyrus sims.

Question 1:  Could a Thriller-8 give less performance than a Voodoo
2-12?

Question 2:  Could a Thriller-8 AGP give less performance than a
Thriller-8 PCI?

About to buy one, don't want to make a mistake.

Actually it is also tied to raw CPU horsepower.  Most of the educated
posts here, seem to indicate the Thriller will beat the Voodoo2 until
you start reaching the PII-300 stage (where they seem to be neck-n-neck
depending on resolution).

Could, but I doubt that it will in your current setup.

% Question 2:  Could a Thriller-8 AGP give less performance than a
% Thriller-8 PCI?

Not less, but maybe marginally better, but sometimes less (depending on
the application and how it utilizes the AGP board.  The only real good
thing about AGP is missing from the Thriller (since it is v1.0 and
doesn't support offloading texture to memory).  Well there is one good
thing about AGP, it will keep free a PCI slot on your board.

% About to buy one, don't want to make a mistake.

I think Genoa has a similar card for a little less, and I have heard
good results with it.

GPL-video card questions

WAIT, WAIT!!   I am looking into a new computer also, and was about to
go ahead and get the Thriller AGP 8 MB card.  THEN, I saw the following
message on the TEN. NASCAR newsgroup.  I don't keep up on RAS these
days, so I'm not sure if this has been posted here.. hmmm, maybe I'd
better put it up just in case.  Based on this message, I decided to go
with the Diamond Stealth for now and maybe upgrade to the next gen
Rendition later.  The message was:
Guys,
I just wanted to help you all out and let you know that you can get a
Diamond Stealth II  4MB PCI S220 Rendition 2200 for 7.95 + shipping.

Go to Buycomp.com..........
http://www.buycomp.com/bc/noframes/product.asp?sku=628141&mscssid=883...
and purchase it for 37.95, very very cheap.  (Actually was 34.95 for
me!)

Then go to Diamond's site......
http://www.diamondmm.com/products/promotions/rebates/
and get the 30 dollar rebate for the card. It is good till Dec 31st
1998.

There you have it, your Rendition 2200 card for 7.95+ shipping.

Considering that they have the Thriller 3D, equivilant, for 71 dollars
and no rebate I'd buy it if I needed a better video card.

The question is, is the Stealth's 4MB of memory on the card enough?
Also, remember that the Stealth uses the 2100 Rendition chip, not the
2200.

   The bad news is:

1) That Diamond Stealth S220 is a decent card (hey, for <$10 you can't
go wrong, right?).  However, its a 4meg card, based on the V2100 chip.
Better than nothing, but those two points make it inferior to the
Thriller (for GPL).

2) From what I've seen, the next generation of Rendition (V3300) will
not support Speedy3D, so no ICR2 (buggy as in may be in V2x00) or
current N2 (future Papyrus releases: N1999, N3, etc., will not
need/use Speedy3D).

Me, I think I'll go with the 8meg Thriller soon (got a V1000 now).
