Video Card for GPL?

Video Card for GPL?

by Carl » Thu, 11 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I need some input.  I'm only getting 10 -11 fps with my PII233/32MB SDRAM,
STB nVIDIA 4MB AGP video card.  From what I've read the Hercules Thriller 3D
or the VooDoo2 are my best choices.  Which of these two would be best for
all around use?  And is there any new cards that might be a better choice?
Also, any other recommendations for upgrading to get my GPL to run better?

Best for GPL would be the thriller, best for all games is the voodoo2.  It
is compatable with most new games, the thriller will only use the rendition
for papy games.  With the 3dfx card, you can wait for the voodoo3 which will
be coming out sometime soon or get a 16MB banshee which is also 3dfx.  It is
a do it all card so you wont be using your STB any more, it will all run
through the banshee.  The voodoo3 will be kinda like the same thing but will
be faster and will be like using a voodoo2 SLI and all comes with 2d also.

But I would wait for the TNT2.I have a V2 and Thriller3D.On my 450mhz
pc I get like 8 to 10 fps more in the Thriller. It also looks way
better on a rendition card.It doesnt look washed out with my Thriller
as it does with the V2.Much better sense of speed since you primarily
stare at the road and with the V2 it looks almost solid but with the
Thriller, the road surface has much texture.I say wait for the TNT2
since my brother has a TNT and it looks killer at 1600x1200.I will get
one as soon as they ship and run it at this resolution on my 21in
monitor:)For now buy a cheap rendition card and just wait awhile.

Will the TNT2 be compatable with GPL though other than the openGL drivers
that arent that great?

Wow, never seen a TNT running GPL in 1600x1200 with anything more than a
slideshow on the screen... What about those mirrors? The TNT is a great
card for many, but not always, and certainly not in GPL at this
stage...  To me, framerate is everything, but there is another major
issue when it comes to selecting the right 3d-card: Does it really work?
Or do I have to wait another 6 weeks for drivers that fixes some
problems and adds some new? (Read Matrox G200)
(3dfx should have added this slogan to their trademark: "It works".
Sure, they have had their issues, remember Rush? But ever since, their
hardware and drivers have been rocking compared to you-name-it.)

A friend of mine recently became a better gpl-driver when he switched
from TNT to V2-sli. This is no joke at all. As he say, the input he
deliver thru his controls now show correct response on the screen.
Before, his input would come too late to correct the rear end spinning
around. Just like the graphics shown was "too late" from actual events
when using the TNT.
I can't say anything about the future of GPL, but the patch coming
should/could show us what directions Papy is heading when it comes to
rasterizer and hardware.
When there is another card out there faster than a sli-setup for half
the price which really works (tm), 3dfx would get some competition.
Until then, they don't have any at all...
It would be great if all the TNT-users out there could get more
performance of out such a great sim. Then the Ati Fury would scream also
(both these cards are at level with V2-SLI if they have the drivers
working, at half the price).
When V3 comes out (April?) you know what you will get: V2-sli and a
banshee in an agp-port saving a lot of slots, and I have an idea that
the V3 actually works (tm) out of the box, with stable drivers, which is
not often the case in this hot race to get the hardware out the door
asap. And the price? Don't know, but they (3dfx) say it will be next to
nothing (read: same as todays Banshee).

If I had to drive gpl tomorrow with the original posters config, I would
get myself a secondhand Voodoo1-card at $25?, no kidding, running in
640x480, waited for the 1.1.patch, and then selected hardware.
But another topic Carl, do you have the cpu to push the next generation
3d-accl.? Sorry, bit I think not. You can't even push a sli-config with
a 233. Maybe a Banshee can do the job for you, and then later this year
you could upgrade both cpu and 2d/3d-card... At last: the difference
between a Terminator and a Banshee is the 3dfx trademark again: "It
Works" :-) Infact "It Works Everywhere" :-)

Any possibility of the V3 working with the Rendition card?  or will it be a
replacement card?  You're right, upgrading my CPU might be in the near
future, I'll see how the prices drop on the PII's now that the PIII's are
out.  thanks, Carl

Sorry, both the Rendition (the version you would buy in this case) and
the V3 are 2D/3D solution AGP-boards, and we have only one agp-slot. You
could of course go for a rendition/V2-combo and use your rendition in
GPL and have the V2-board(s) for everything else where the rendition is
a bit dated...
But, if you don't play _any_ other game(s), then you could do with a
rendition-only setup, but the technology is moving forward as we all
know when we look after all the money spent on this shit :-) But it's a
hobby, so we really don't care, do we? :-)

Sounds to me like he wasn't getting 36 fps with this TNT. I suppose this
is very common if you don't know how to fix the slow mirrors bug - by
using the mirrorsevery option. By setting mirrorsevery to 4 and using
celeron 450A, TNT and 800x600 I can get constant 36 fps, possibly dropping
to 30 fps in the start.
