A friend of mine has dual 12M V2's and runs the fancy carsets without
trouble at most tracks.    He has problems (either fill rate or texture
thrashing, we're not sure) running the highres carsets at a few of the
more demanding tracks like Crystal Palace.  He also has troubles with at
some of the older tracks that have been updated with 16 bit textures and
fancy skies.

Shouldn't have bothered- got there 20 minutes early and there was a huge
crowd already there.  Store only had a few in stock too, with no rain
checks.  Walked out empty handed and kind of pissed at myself for taking
their lure.

The real drawback with the V3 is the limited texture memory.  GPL in it's
native form will run great on a V3 (provided you have a good cpu) but if you
want to upgrade the graphics with the new large textures, then a V5 and the
D3D patch become neccessary.

The initial specs for the V3 was that it was TWICE as fast as two V2s
in SLI. The V3 3000 I had (oced from 166 to 200mhz) was pretty good
even with 3d wheels and car updates, etc. Usually fine at 1280x1024,
although some tracks I had to turn it down to 1024x768. I would
imagine that SLI V2s would have trouble running higher than 800x600,
they were limited to 1024x768 anyway.

This was all with a 1.4 ghz tbird, plenty of CPU power certainly helps
it out. :D

I agree, that's why I dumped my V3 for a GF3. But 3DFX is still the
best option for GPL in my book. Just for every other game around that
it sucks :P

Thanks to everyone who responded to my V2/SLI question. So, all other
things being equal (which, of course, they never are...) if you had a
box with a good AMD processor (1GHz or better), a ton of RAM, Windows 98
(XP is a scam, so was ME) and all the necessary accoutrements, and you
had no other use for the box but ***, particularly (let's say) GPL,
GP3, N4, Superbike 2K, GP3, SCGT -- the usual suspects -- what would be
the video card of current choice to take advantage of all the textures,
add-ons, and enhancements, and still have smooth framerates?

Agreed.  If memory serves me correctly, I believe that my 2nd V2 allowed me
to run GPL at a higher resolution, but detail and frame rates were only
marginally better than with one.

When I got my V5, it was a BIG improvement.

Money no object ?

GF3 Ti500 or ATI Radeon 8500

I'm going with the ATI some time early next year as my V5 runs the only
game I'm currently playing very well and it looks superb, the game that
is, not the V5

If you're not looking to spend too much money you can get a good deal on
a GF2 PRO/TI or one of the outgoing ATI Radeon 64 MB DDR cards,
somewhere between 100 and 150 US, some people speak highly of the "Kyro"
cards as well, but I have mixed feeling about those, no personal
experience though !, with a 1 Ghz + CPU I wouldn't go with a low end GF2
MX or ATI Radeon VE

Beers and cheers

I agree, but would add a middle option if you want a GREAT deal for a
reasonable price. Get a GF3 ti 200 for around US$ 170-220 and
overclock it to ti 500 specs. Best brands are Leadtek and Gainward,
they are virtually guaranteed to get to the higher spec card, and also
beat it :) Visiontek are also not bad, but hit-and-miss, some do
REALLY well, others only average. Check out this thread:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=31&threadid=593596
for a comprehensive roundup of everyone's results.

BTW, for those who don't know, the ti 200 runs at 175mhz core, 400 mhz
RAM. Standard GF3 is 200 core, 460 RAM. The ti 500 is at 230 core, 500
RAM. No other difference. My leadtek runs at 225 core, 540 RAM, so not
a bad buy :) Well worth it.
