GPL sound breaks up

by Salthear » Fri, 30 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi just dloaded the demo, my sound it realy bad ! crackling static etc...
I had the demo on an older 166 and it was ok, I have also installed the new
version of the demo from a UK PC gamer and the sound was the same.

The only thing that wories me is that on the PC gamer cd there was a GPL
patch which added a DLL to the windows/system dir.  I have no idea what the
filename was.
I am thinking that this may be related to the problem.

No other games that I have exhibit this problem (and I have alot :) )

Thanks for any help, I really want to get this sim but the sound prob will
make it unplayable for me.

Cheers,
Salt.

Sorry, thought it may have been a problem others had seen and unrelated to
any particular type of sound card...

FWIW here is my setup:

Celeron 300a o'ced to 450
Gigabyte 686BX mboard (intel 440bx based)
i740 8MB 2d card
voodoo 2 12 mb
64 mb 100mhz sdram
Yamaha OPL3-saX isa sound card

The game absolutely screams on this setup (I feel it is too fast) So the
sound probs are not affecting my performance.

I have tried different demos (I am dloading a new win98 version now)
microsoft's drivers for my sound card, the drivers that came with the sound
card, and new drivers from Yamaha's site.  I have tried disabling the
joystick and playing with the keyboard, setting different numbers of sound
channels, different volumes etc

The sound is *completely* garbled not just a little bit of static as others
have reported.

As I have said, I do not have this problem with *any* other game whatsoever,
the sound is always perfect and crystal clear. (Quake 2, Unreal, WW2
fighters demo, Tomb raider 2, forsaken, F1RS, Battlezone, NFS3, Hexen 2,
motoracer 2, Half -life, links ls, F15, longbow 2 etc etc)

Could anyone out there help me, I would love to get this game but the sound
prob makes it a no go at the moment.

Cheers,
Salt.

The demos released before the demo you are donwloading now didn't run
well on Windows 98. I bet on your P166 Windows95 was installed.

Guess you solved your own problem by downloading the latest version.
