Pentium Pro MADNESS!!! HELP me please!!!

This is soooo frustrating!!! I just dropped 2000 bucks on a new Pentium
Pro 200, Asus motherboard, 32 megs EDO, ATI Mach 64 (2 MEGS VRAM) and the
results are TOTALLY DISAPPOINTING!!! ok.. let me explain.. I'm not gonna
go into all that video speed jazz because I don't think it's important..
But this is what I do.. I go into the graphics detail option, turn on
SVGA mode, turn on *ALL* the details, and guess what!?!?! I get an
estimated frame rate of 13.1 FPS!!!!!! ARGHHHH! ***y shitty!!!. Now,
compared to my brother's P166, 64 megs EDO, Matrox Millenium (2 megs
WRAM) he gets 12.5 fps with the same settings (SVGA, All details). I just
CANT BELIEVE THIS!!! I thought the PPRO was *ATLEAST* 60% better than the
P166.!!!! ARGH!!! this is ***y pissing... maybe I should go pickup
fastvid.. anyone know where it is?!?! Oh.. BTW.. Can someone oout there
with a PPRO post there results to me? I'm not talking about that gp
log:on stuff, but the actual estimated frame rates in SVGA with all
details... JeB ?!? are you out there man..

You do want to pickup FASTVID. There was a note up here
today with the address. I don't have it at this moment.
I get, with everything on, an estimated frame rate of the
21.6 setting, if sky off, I get the 23.? result.
That is with FASTVID enabled. Without FASTVID I get a 17.?
report as I recall. Clearly, FASTVID is a big factor.
HOWEVER, the only track that actually pushed my PPro is
MONACO, and by that I mean I get over 100% PO reports.
The other tracks in almost all situations the PO is 100% or
lower. GP2 is the only game/sim that I've seen actually
"push" the PPro. The rest of what is out is a breeze.
BTW, keep in mind that the "best" of the PPro is yet to
come. As more 32 bit stuff comes down, it really starts
to shine. Load up NT and see what I mean.

Calm down, you will sort this out, and you do have the
FASTEST GUN in town...hehehehe
Think about it, your PPro is faster than the 166 NOW, and
you have not yet enabled the WC option with FASTVID.
You are going to be just fine, believe me.
Wait till you see the PPro run some other "less demanding"
things, like say...QUAKE at 34 frames in SVGA!!!
Or, really moving at 98.8 frames in QUAKE in 320X240...it
is really funny to watch.

GOOD LUCK

OH, BTW, I think your Brother's Matrox is a BETTER card.
I know that video cards have NOTHING to do with speed and
all...but my Matox Mill 4 meg sure give me a sense of
security...hehehehe

The problem with the Pentium Pro 200 is that it is configured to run
32-bit programs, but 16-bit programs run pretty slow on it, so it
is a waste of time buying a PRO 200 for games coz most of them
are written in 16-bit code!

Please give us a list of the "16" bit programs that
you are running that would suffer under a PPro.

Thanks in advance.

I would love to see that list also JEB. Using this type of logic, I
suppose I had better run out and pick up a 486-33, because Falcon 3.0
runs best on it. Actually, I have an old copy of Falcon AT, anyone got
a 286 they want to sell? Hahahahhahaha. Get teh Pro 200. Gateway
charges $115.00 more for the Pro200 than the P5200.

The P5 is passe.

Maybe I should have qualified my post with:
"I have heard that the PPRO is written for 32 bit programs and a lot of
games are written in 16 bit code, and compiled with 16bit compilers"

I don't know if this is true or false, but it would explain the problems
that people have, and I also don't know which games are written with 16
or 32 bit code, but I'm sure Descent][ is 32bit and Quake of course, but
after that i wouldnt have a clue.

Anyone got any ideas?

Every game worth owning today is programmed in protected
mode(real 32-bit). For instance a program that shows the
DOS4/GW banner when you load it, runs in protected mode.

There are other protected mode run time systems too.
Eg. Ultima IV uses another system but I can't remember
which.

Actually there are no reasons whatsoever to program
16-bit anymore.
I exclude the 80286 romantics of course.
