Drivers:
We have recently completed our first phase of testing for the:
INTEL PENTIUM PRO 2
P7 MERCED
786-600MHZ
Or whatever you want to call it...
Subject: P7/Pro2
1). The tester recently took delivery of two(2) Pentium Pro2's.
2). These machines are 600 mhz. plus with 64 meg. of main memory
and have 2 Ultra Wide SCSI 4 gig drives that are stripped.
3). These machines are a precursor of the new line of PRO2's which ill
be commerically available mid to late 1997.
4). As delivered these systems have Windows NT (v4) as their OS and
are not designed to run Windows95 and or DOS applications. That
is not to say they can't but there are conflicts in doing so.
5). From a DOS *** propspective this type of system offers the
best and worse of all worlds. Eight(8) and six***(16) bit cards
don't fare well. Memory conflicts exist with most of the available
sound cards using DOS drivers. Eight(8) bit analogue control cards
experience heat warp in a relatively short amount
of time and are difficult to address properly (without conflict)
6). On the positive side graphics are tremendous, superb. There is
no such thing as frame drop on this type of system. Even the
most graphics intensive applications are VERY smooth, clear and
flicker free.
7). In summation I find it difficult to comprehend that a system of
this type will be received well in the home market. It will be
very pricey, difficult to configure and an overkill in most
cases.
